Emmy-nominated 30 Rock writer Kay Cannon has landed at CBS with a pilot production commitment for her half-hour comedy, The Runt. The co-executive producer of New Girl and writer of the sleeper hit Pitch Perfect, Cannon will pen the script while Jason Winer, the Modern Family director, is set to direct.
According to Deadline, The Runt is a single camera comedy about a group of five adult siblings, told from the perspective of the youngest.
Always the scrawniest and the butt of the joke, [The Runt is] now the most successful. And no matter how hard she tries she can’t seem to break the family dynamics established when she was a kid.
The project was inspired by Cannon’s own family of seven siblings, of which she is the “smallest and the scrappiest.” This is not the first time Winer and Cannon have attempted to work together; as Winer joked, “the business gods didn’t smile at us” until this year. “Kay and I have similar comedy DNA,” he said, noting that he and Cannon both have ties to Chicago’s ImprovOlympic and Second City groups. “[Cannon] is relentlessly positive, has an amazing and unique voice and real leadership capabilities. And being mentored by Tina for so many years didn’t hurt.”
The Runt is the first sale for Winer’s new production company, Small Dog Picture Co.
