4 Political Women Who Inspired Onscreen Characters And Plots

Creative types find inspiration in odd places. Alan Ball, executive producer of HBO program “True Blood,” recently stated that Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann influenced the new season of the popular show, which quite frankly comes as a major shock since the former presidential candidate doesn’t exactly exude vampire vibes.

But the T.V. guy recently told Entertainment Weekly that some of Bachmann’s beliefs got him thinking about the kind of effect a politician like her would have on a vampire society, stating, “What would happen if she became president? A lot of right-wingers would like to see a theocracy in America. From there we thought, ‘What would a vampire theocracy be and how would you justify it? What kind of impact would it have on humans?’”

I suppose we’ll find out in upcoming episodes. Bachmann isn’t the only female figure to foster good onscreen material, so here are some of her kindred spirits whose characteristics, fashion preferences, and personalities have inspired the entertainment industry.

1.Michele Bachmann

When you think Bachmann, vampires probably don't come to mind, but "True Blood" creator Alan Ball recently said that the former presidential candidate influenced the show, telling Entertainment Weekly, “My first instinct about going into religion and politics was from watching Michele Bachmann, who thinks she has a direct line to God. What would happen if she became president? A lot of right-wingers would like to see a theocracy in America. From there we thought, ‘What would a vampire theocracy be and how would you justify it? What kind of impact would it have on humans?’” Now there's something I don't want to speculate about.

2.Christine O'Donnell and Sarah Palin

Big time Palin family critic Kathy Griffin killed two birds with one stone last year when she portrayed a character on "Glee" inspired by Christie O'Donnell and Sarah Palin. Donning Palin's signature red outfit and glasses and calling herself a “Twitterer and former Tea Party candidate,” Griffin looked more like Palin than O'Donnell, but uttered the former Senate contender's classic "I am not a witch line."

3.Hillary Clinton

In "Primary Colors," Emma Thompson portrays a character loosely based on the former first lady.

4.Michelle Obama

Two months ago, comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus said her "Veep" character's outfits reflect those of first lady Michelle Obama: “[My character Selina Myers] is not as chic as Michelle Obama, but who could be?” She added that deploying Obama's sexy but powerful style allowed her character to "move it slightly away from the square look — no offense."
