5 Ways To Be More Giving At Work This Holiday Season

Every time the holiday season rolls around, many people start thinking about what they’d like to put on their wish lists. While it’s nice to receive gifts, “things” are a little overrated after junior high. At the end of the day, most of us have more stuff than we need, so giving back should be a priority for everyone as 2012 comes to an end. Chances are, you’ve been on quite a few professional roller-coasters with your colleagues, and you wouldn’t be where you are today without their support and encouragement. Here’s how to show your appreciation for awesome coworkers this holiday season.

1.Say 'yes' more!

Think Jim Carrey in Yes Man. Doing favors for others isn't always fun, but what goes around comes around! Try to be a little more understanding and open at work and good things will follow.

2.Don't blow up when you're denied a raise or promotion

It's no fun to feel under-appreciated or slighted, but don't take it personally if you don't get the pay raise you've been waiting all year to request. Chances are, your manager isn't saying no just to spite you. It's more about the company's current financial situation than you.

3.Offer to cover shifts for your coworkers

This is the best present you could give a colleague during the holiday season...

4.Besides baked goods, of course

Make or buy treats for everyone at the office to enjoy! You'll be Ms. Popular for at least a day.

5.Listen to your coworkers when they need to vent, even if you're a little busy

G-chat meltdowns suck, and there's a reason they often spiral out of control during normal working hours. Sooner or later, one of your colleagues is going to have an awful day and need a virtual shoulder to cry on (because crying at the office is only for weaklings, duh), so take fifteen minutes out of your schedule to listen to/read the epic rant they've drafted. You'd want an understanding coworker to do the same for you, so have a heart during the holidays and provide an open ear.
