Whitney Houston died yesterday at the age of 48, leaving behind a record-breaking, award-winning, chart-topping legacy. Here’s a look back at the most notable of those records and awards.
Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” was at the top of the Hot 100 for a record-holding fourteen weeks.
“I Will Always Love You” also holds the record for the single-week sales by a female artist. It sold 632,000 copies in the last week of December 1992. Here it is featured in The Bodyguard:
The Bodyguard Soundtrack, headlined by Houston’s songs, is the United States’ best-selling soundtrack of all time. It went platinum 17 times and sold a total of over 13 million copies. Here’s another hit from the film soundtrack:
Houston sang The Star Spangled Banner at the 1991 Super Bowl. It’s the only version of the song to ever go platinum.
Though some of Houston’s biggest successes were in the 90′s, her 1985 debut album, Whitney Houston, was the best-selling album by a new or female artist in the 80′s.
