A Guide To Everything That’s Happened With Santorum, Abortion, And Birth Control In The Last Month

If you’re anything like me, you’re exhausted by the abortion and contraceptive chatter that has been talking the nation’s ears off for weeks, and not just because some of the discussion comes across as regressive, but because it’s nearly impossible to keep up with and each new day seems to bring a new scandal. To keep you up to date on everything that has gone down lately, we’ve compiled the top stories and links on the contraceptive and abortion buzz — and the one person who’s generating the most discussion on women’s health lately: GOP hopeful Rick Santorum. Here’s our roundup from most recent news items to the ones that jump-started a complex debate:

Santorum circa 1995: “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress.” I’ll venture to say many people would pull a “Back to the Future” if they could to return to the past and ask you to reconsider changing your perspective, Santorum. [The Huffington Post]

In 2011, Santorum said he’d criminally charge abortion providers. Quite a contrast from his statements fifteen years ago! [The Jane Dough]

Last week, California Rep. Darrell Issa refused to let a female witness participate in at a contraception hearing, as she was not part of the clergy, so several House democrats walked out of the gathering. [ABC News]

Rep. Joe Walsh says the birth control debate is “not about women.” [The Huffington Post]

On the topic of birth control, Santorum donor Foster Freiss told MSNBC: “You know, back in my days, they’d use Bayer aspirin for contraceptives…The gals put it between their knees, and it wasn’t that costly.” One of a million reasons why I’m glad to be a product of the 80s. [Mediaite]

After a major backlash for proposing to sever ties with and stop donating to Planned Parenthood, The Susan G. Komen foundation reversed its decision to maintain its “commitment to [its] mission of saving women’s lives.” This came after several resignations of Komen higher-ups as well as nationwide outrage over the funding cut.
