Adam Carolla Said Women Aren’t As Funny As Men — Why Are People So Shocked?

Leave it to Adam Carolla, “Juggie” auteur, to offer yet another lazy, inaccurate armchair observation about women and comedy.

“Dudes are funnier than chicks,” Carolla quipped to the New York Post, before implying that women aren’t fired from sitcom writing gigs because of favoritism — or a quota system… or something? He wasn’t clear. But gosh, isn’t it great that someone finally explained why there’s such a flood of women dominating all the writing gigs in T.V. amiright? (He also said some super-racist stuff too — seriously, you should go check it out!)

Never mind that his observation is a near-parroting of a roundly dismissed, five-year-old Chris Hitchens essay. There’s a larger issue that remains: Why does anyone care what this ignoramus thinks? Why is it that everyone with a frontal lobe and a laptop (myself included) couldn’t hold it in any longer — just had to write some post talking about some idiot who (wouldn’t you know it!) said something idiotic?

Carolla, whose most significant cultural contribution remains “The Man Show,” is an asshat. And he hasn’t done much to prove otherwise. So why do we care what he says?

For example, here’s a list of things that are funnier than Adam Carolla:

– Ingrown toenail surgery

– Farting during a pelvic exam

– Trying to explain the plot of ABC drama Revenge to anyone, anywhere

– This seductive-looking koala:

– 30 Rock

– Veep

– Parks and Recreation

– Bridesmaids

– Any one of these tweets making fun of what Adam Carolla said about female comedians

In fact, many of the “comebacks” made me laugh harder than Adam Carolla has in years (like this one, for instance). Yea, okay, I’m not his target audience — but maybe we’ve figured out why it is we like to needle at dumb people who we never expected to say something smart in the first place: We get to laugh at the idea that anyone would think what they think, ever. (Honestly, I could have titled this post “Dumb Dude Says Dumb Thing.)

So thanks, Carolla. This was fun.
