Ann Romney Actually Laughed At DeNiro’s “First Lady” Joke, Can We Move On Now?

You can all get some sleep now: Ann Romney was not offended when “The Godfather II” actor Robert DeNiro joked that the United States isn’t ready for another white first lady yet. Thank God for that, I couldn’t function because I was hurting so much for her and the other potential first ladies the actor quipped about.

During a Wednesday appearance on Piers Morgan’s show, Ann told the television host that she got a kick out of DeNiro’s gaffe, adding that people need to lighten up before we become robots:

“I laughed. You know what? I took it for what it was, a joke…We’re all overreacting to so many things and making things so difficult which means we have to watch every single word that comes out of our mouth. We can’t be spontaneous, we can’t be funny. We can’t — I will tell you in politics, the fastest way to get in trouble is to make a joke. So I think Robert De Niro has just learned that.”

It’s a good thing she didn’t care, because presidential candidate Newt Gingrich thought it was a terrible comment: “What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong, it divides the country.” But even conservative commentator Ann Coulter, who is well-versed in exposing hypocrisy on the left, couldn’t understand the offense taken by DeNiro’s jab. Granted, Michelle Obama wasn’t pleased with DeNiro’s choice of words, but she was among the few to voice opposition to it.

As we’ve seen from Ann Romney and Karen Santorum this week, at least half of the potential first ladies are much thicker skinned than we give them credit for, so it’s time to quit pretending they’re delicate creatures who will be shattered by even the slightest dirty look or unkind remark.

I never had a problem with the joke, only the blatant hypocrisy of the corrupt, liberal media.  If a Romney fundraiser asked if we were ready for a black first lady, we all know what the response from the left would be.
