Report: Avon’s Board Wanted To Get Rid Of Andrea Jung Completely
11:45 am, February 22nd | by Hillary Reinsberg
Heads turned when former Avon CEO Andrea Jung was removed from her post as CEO, but scandal was avoided with the announcement that she’d be staying on as Chairman. New sources say, however, that the board wanted to remove her altogether.
Two “people familiar with the matter” tell Bloomberg Businessweek that Avon’s board of directors went back and forth for three weeks, arguing over and deciding what to do.
According to the report, “Some directors initially wanted to fire Jung and even those who wanted her to stay on as chairman agreed Avon needed a new CEO, the people said.”
In other words, everyone thought a CEO shake-up was needed, and some even thought she should be asked to totally leave the company. The decision to keep her on as Chairman, the sources say, was based around the fact that she’s become an icon for the company. Other reports, it’s worth mentioning, said Jung herself asked the board to separate the two roles. Of course, that could have been because she had a feeling she was on the outs, and this was a negotiable way to partially stay on.
There’s no word yet on who will replace Jung, though there was the suggestion that she wanted a woman to fill the role.
