Baby Dumbbells: The Latest In Frugal Mommy Workouts

Slimming down can be rather challenging for women, especially after they’ve given birth, but why not put the self-indulgent newborns to good use and force them to serve as a dumbbell?
Some new mothers are taking this approach with “mommy and me” workouts in the Manhattan area. Gyms all over New York City are offering these courses, which enable moms to simultaneously break a sweet and bond with their young. If there’s anything a New Yorker can do, it’s multitask, and they excel at it in the popular weight loss classes:
Burning calories has never been more adorable — or more effective. Moms lunge while extending their 15- and 16-pound bundles of joy forward in a recent 55-minute class, or hug their babies close while squatting, to help tone their legs.
“You can feel the burn!” gasps Jacki Garber, 31, hoisting 11-week-old Olivia. “She’s getting big, so it’s getting harder. I feel it in my arms.”
…
“I never did a pushup in my life until there was a baby beneath me. Now I do them all the time!” marvels Park Slope parent Adria Hasha, 32, with 5-month-old son Henry.
She shed 40 pounds in a little over three months taking the class.
Careful, ladies. You don’t want to encourage people to have babies just to thin out. Or, you know, turn infants into props.
