Barbie’s Top 10 Most Bizarre Careers

Today, Mattel released its new Presidential Election Barbie, a tradition it’s kept up for the last few election cycles. And once again we’re facing a presidential campaign in which Barbie was the only female “candidate” in the race. Sigh.

Between this — and pondering how much election Barbie reminds us of a certain someone already on the trail — we realized this isn’t the only one of Barbie’s gigs that hasn’t exactly been rooted in reality.

It’s not that we should completely rip on Barbie here. In an odd way, Barbie has been a bit of a pioneer, career-wise, over the years — if for no other reason than her ability to get jobs few living women of her time would be able to. She was an astronaut nearly two decades before Sally Ride’s first mission. She was a surgeon in 1973. This is great.

Yet sometimes, on the road to career advancement, Barbie’s taken some weird jobs. Or, more accurately, she’s taken some perfectly normal jobs and weirded them up big time.

Below, our list of Barbie’s 10 most bizarre career efforts.

Except for Cheerleader Barbie I find all the temporary jobs to be pretty normal.  It’s all about the accessories she comes with, just ask Styleite.  While little girls love to dress Barbie and her friends in the latest, greatest fashions they love the extras that come with, the microphone for one.  Back in the day they even has a Ken doll that resembled a reporter who might one day be Anderson Cooper(that Ken eerily looked like AC) sans BlackBerry.

Journalist Barbie looks like Sideline Reporter Barbie, or Entertainment Tonight Red Carpet Reporter Barbie.  And what little girl says “I want to be a McDonald’s Cashier like Barbie when I grow up!”

Did I see Star Trek and X Files Barbie and Ken sets, or was it the jet lag talking?
