People Upset That Really Cute Panda Is On BBC‘s Female Faces Of The Year List

Each year, the BBC produces a ”Faces of the Year” segment, highlighting 12 men and 12 women — one for each month. The December woman is, well, a panda. And people are really upset about it.

Sweetie, an adorable panda, is in Scotland right now, on loan from China. She has, it would seem, dominated tabloid headlines for the month of December. As The Telegraph notes, people are ticked — and crying sexism:

The list sparked a mock-frenzy on Twitter with users labeling the episode “panda gate”…

…Labour MP Stella Creasy said: “No offense to sweetie – sure a lovely panda and best in class etc- but clue is in title ‘women’ not ‘female of the species’ of the year …”

Is a panda the most important woman we’ll remember when we think back to December 2011? No, but take a look at the rest of the list. Pippa Middleton is the face of April, for her role as maid of honor in her sister’s royal wedding. For July we have the woman who married the Prince of Monaco. October is marked with the Duchess of Alba, the 85-year-old Spanish royal who married a handsome non-aristocrat a quarter century her junior. Then there’s November, which is represented by the U.S. Marine who got Justin Timberlake to come to the Marine Corps Ball with her. Though leaders like Gabrielle Giffords and Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff also made the cut, a full quarter of the list is comprised of people involved in royal European weddings. Let’s not pretend this is a list of the world’s most significant female influencers. It’s just a fun roundup of news stories that happened in each month of the year with faces attached to them. You have to pick your battles, and we’re not picking this one. (Plus, the BBC says they include an animal every year).

Besides, we’ve seen much worse than pandas. Just have a look Forbes‘ most interesting women list, which includes none other than Kardashian-Mom Kris Jenner.
