Belvedere Vodka Unveils Horrific Ad Acting Out Rape Scene

Is this the most offensive ad in your recent memory? Questions like that rarely serve much purpose, but I’m genuinely asking — because this is the most awful piece of promotional material I’ve seen published in the last several months, if not years.

The ad I’m referring to, which Jezebel first spotted, was unveiled and then quickly recalled by Belvedere vodka. The ad, as you can see, reads, “Unlike some people, Belvedere always goes down smoothly.” Hah, see, because vodka sometimes doesn’t “go down smoothly!” Just like this woman here… who looks like she’s being sexually assaulted.

While we’re used to see piggish rape jokes like this on trashy t-shirts, the accompanying photo takes the ad to whole new heights of awfulness. Put bluntly: This woman looks genuinely terrified. It’s not funny; it’s not cute. She looks scared. That anyone thought this was a good idea — even if Belvedere did, as Jezebel said, remove it almost immediately — is disturbing.

And it will probably be very successful.

I honestly cannot understand the people (i.e. the public, not Belvedere) defending this ad. How could you get anything other than sexual assault from this and why are people so defensive of rape culture?

  • Hello

Uh, why is this rape? Isn’t that her husband? Some people just WANT TO BE OFFENDED.

  • Ben

    That’s fuked up.

  • Horrified

How the bleep would you know if that is or isn’t her husband. That expression on her face sure isn’t a good one, and why would I want to buy a product that thinks showing me a horrified/terrified woman is a good thing?

In order to be “genuinely” terrified as the article insinuates, the woman in the picture would have to be actually getting raped. What we see in this picture is NOT photographic evidence of an actual rape, but a pair of advertising models doing their f–king job… “portraying” characters according to the modeling contract for the paying customer Belvedere Vodka.

The article says she *looks* genuinely terrified, not that she is. Nobody thinks it is an actual rape. But, together with the reference to “going down smoothly”, it’s hard to see it as representing anything else.

Why on earth did Belvedere or the advertising company want her to look terrified and as if she’s being sexually assaulted?

And you might want to avoid associating whining with having a pathetic life when you’re whining yourself.

The ad is more than the ad. They count on people writing stories about it and posting it on Facebook. That’s part of the marketing. They fully know it’s offensive and they count on people talking about it.

Same thing with those guys who snap at a mall and start shooting everyone. They just want to get in the news and become notorious. I think the media should just ingnore crap like this and it will disappear.

  • Anonymous

I’m amazed that no one at the ad company or the vodka company looked at that and realized it looked rather rape-y.  All it would have taken to fix that would be to have the woman look bored or annoyed.  I’ve never heard of Belvedere, but is their advertising budget so small they couldn’t spring for an extra shot or two?

Ok, I may be out of line here, but the ad does not seem like an illusion to rape at all. It is suggesting that the guy is in NO WAY smooth in his attempt to win over the young lady who is clearly not having any of his shenanigans.

I think the ad is just poorly conceived. I do not believe the ad-agency guys were sitting around a table going, “Hey! What if show a guy getting ready to mouth-rape a girl who is fighting back in terror?”"BRILLIANT!”No, it is much more likely another shitty ad that missed its mark.

  • SW

The picture itself could be argued to be non-sexual (as unlikely as that is to any of us with eyes… and brains… and compassion), but the accompanying text proves the intent behind the ad.

I hate that companies can pull shit like this, knowing it’ll get them lots of airtime. It’s harmful.

  • SW

Not to mention that the text implies she wouldn’t “GO DOWN” and that he’s having to force the issue. Even if they’re married, it’s assault.

I can’t believe all the trolling assholes in this thread. I have to leave before I reach homicidal levels.

  • JackWiskey

Not defending the ad, i think it’s in bad taste, but i don’t think it was meant to be taken as rape, but as a consensual sex act but the woman is having trouble *ahem* ‘fitting him in’ the look on her face might be pain. Again, not defending it, just a different interpretation. Take away the caption, and the headlines which tell you it’s rape, it’s impossible to tell what is happening in the picture.

The point all women refuse to admit is 99% of all
commercials promote violence against men. You B****S think it’s funny, look at
the bud light commercial and tell me a woman shoving a man out of a moving car
is funny. But this ad is condemned because it conflicts with the feminist
man-hater agenda. The real truth is violence against men is FUNNY but violence against
women is a crime. WAKE-UP MEN.

  • relax

Who knows if this is supposed to be depicting rape? And why does it matter? Belvedere clearly thought it was…both when it released the ad, and when it pull it. It’s not like Belvedere turned itself inside out (as many above have done) to try and find a plausible way to interpret this that excludes rape. It just pulled the ad. Because it knew it was offensive. It’s almost like they released the ad knowing they would pull it. (Hmm.) Of course, if you are of the mind that there is nothing at all vomit-enducing about the ad, you might be more puzzled by Belvedere pulling the ad than, at least so far, anyone is. Personally, I think all of the people above, all of them, know exactly what this is. Some might want to be offended by others calling this what it is, perhaps because they feel like their right to rape is being challenged. Perhaps because they just like to be insenstive assholes. Don’t know. And it doesn’t matter.

You will see that i am an old woman by this reference. As Earl Long, brother of Huey Long, said many years ago…there ain’t no bad publicity! I don’t give a rat’s ass what they say about me, jus spell my name right. “. That’s going to get Belvedere vodka all they really want: publicity.

  • Oh Please, Give it a Rest!

You know, everyone is making too much out of this. I’ve read everyone’s opinions and various childish insults when others disagree. Being one of the millions of women who has experienced what it is like to be sexually violated, I can certainly see how this ad would give that impression. However, from my road of healing to overcome the trauma I experienced I have learned several things: When you are a victim of any type of violent crime, you tend to “see” that event in many aspects of our lives; also many victims unknowingly and unwillingly put themselves in a situation to become victims again. It happens with all violent crimes, but seems to be more common in cases of sexual trauma.
That being said, does this ad portray a rape, inappropriate touching or “tickling”? Maybe. The ad is ambiguous at best. I can’t help but notice that the man looks like he’s gone through a few of those vodka bottles! Also the look on her face just as easily could be surprise …. mouth and eyes wide open as the shot was taken mid-laughter as she is falling back. One thing is certain, the ad was inappropriate and ill thought out, or Belvedere wouldn’t have pulled the ad.
I do have to agree with Mle2000us to some degree. Whats inappropriate for one should be for all. I’m talking about the double standard. Women (in general) use sexuality when it suits them,Not long ago, Johnny Depp came under fire for comparing a grueling photoshoot to rape. He expressed himself quite well, and explained in what way, how it was like rape. I understood his perspective and really could see how he could have felt that way. Well women began screaming what an insensitive asshole he is, and demanded an apology (of which they got). Really women?! You don’t bring enlightenment about sexual assault when you act that way, you weaken it. It becomes nothing more than a joke throughout society! Women do not have a monopoly on being victims of violence, or sexual assault from the opposite sex. Women are more than capable of being the ones who commit the assault. Men have been raped by women; and domestic violence on men by women is quickly becoming an epidemic! It’s not okay to have ads or television programs that belittle and degrade women, because as we know life often imitates art (and I use that term very loosely); but guess what, it’s not ok to have ads or television programs that degrade men either! I find it all together annoying how men are often portrayed and ignorant dogs that couldn’t find their way to a toilet for a drink of water if it weren’t for the superior intellect of the woman in their lives that are kind enough to put them on a leash and lead them to the toilet!
Choose your battles. Had this ad been ignored, it would have just died quietly. Now, it doesn’t matter that Belvedere removed the ad. Women are doing the job for free. The name Belvedere is now notorious. Sales will sky rocket. Some will buy because of the ridiculous controversy it was turned into. Most others will buy because the name Belvedere will be stuck in their heads and they won’t even know why.
Wow, Belvedere should post thanks to women everywhere for making this a successful ad campaign!

  • 12voltman1

I never saw a rape face. Wouldn’t know what one would look like,

I really don’t think they were intentionally TRYING to condone or make a joke out of rape. I think their intention was to simply get cheap laughs from the douchebag frat boys who buy their product (and, let’s be perfectly honest, they succeeded at that). That being said, the ad is tastless, tactless, careless, and mind-blowingly idiotic.

IMO, RAPE is a crime of domination and violence, punishable by castration.  I have little sympathy for those who must rape. But in the case of this commercial advertisement – the “rape” is the figment of the author’s imagination. A little self reflection might be required.

  • Oh Please, Give it a Rest!

Thanks to the guest who posted the link to the actual video the still shot was taken from. It proves my point that the one photo is ambiguous, and that people see what they choose to see based on their own preconceptions. You want to see rape, that’s what you saw. Watching the video proves the intent was completely different. What is sad that in today’s society there should be numerous female role models, but there aren’t. My 22 year old daughter believes that the majority of women are stupid; this is one example as to the reason why. Frankly I’m beginning to understand her perspective. The gross assumptions made on this forum has made me ashamed to be a woman … and that doesn’t happen very often!

  • Mr. Picatinny

Might want to get some reading glasses suckfister!

Hey dumbshit, it’s probably because women’s violence against men on TV is imaginary, whereas men’s violence against women in real life is not.

  • Anon

Even if people could magically realize that this picture was ripped from an unrelated comedy sketch that they’ve probably never seen, removing the image from that video also removes the context. Try to follow along – It’s not an awkward moment anymore, it’s a vodka advertisement. If you think the fact that this came from a source depicting a different sentiment somehow serves as an excuse, you may be an idiot.

  • Mags

well, I haven’t seen the clip the photo is cut from, but I only noticed how someone could see a rape scene here after reading loads of different posts on many different websites!
I agree the ad isn’t in good taste, but going as far as to see rape – I think that’s pushing it. If any situation where a guy gropes a girl is seen as rape, it shows the ridiculous level reached by PC in some ‘developed’ countries.
I also haven’t come across the real meaning of the ad explained anywhere!
Perhaps ‘one reads what one wants to read’ in a text based on basic colloquial language, but the meaning of the text is very simple – it’s the guy who doesn’t go down smoothly, his behaviour/ actions were undoubtedly met with grave disapproval and retaliation (unlike the vodka, which was not repelled). See, simple.
Don’t get me wrong – I don’t think this ad is a good one, but I totally agree with you that this forum, just as many others, doesn’t say much about women in society these days – or their ability to think rationally.
It’s a pity that women are so touchy and seriously over-sensitive.
Rape is rape, sexual molestation is sexual molestation, both are obviously wrong and inexcusable, but searching for hidden meanings where they don’t exist – that’s just paranoid.

A man in a submissive role against a woman with a terrified look on his face? I’ll drink to *that*.

  • GorgeousAnonymous

Agreed. This ad would’ve never received so much attention if the women had just ignored it. It, along with the idiots commenting here, clearly intend to provoke, and the women have fallen for it. You should know better. Now, Belvedere gets all the attention, and the women will continue to cry about the whole affair. End result – better sales, hordes of pissed off women, and a dangerous precedent in advertising.

  • mo

Actually it’s a pair of actors whose images were casually stolen by Belvedere, who is not a paying customer, from an online video. The context of the characters in the video it was stolen from are irrelevant here, as Belvedere is couching them in a different context–the company is presenting it loaded with innuendo, and it’s disingenuous to suggest that people recognizing that innuendo are dirty, dirty monkeys for getting exactly what the ad was going for.

Wow, Dookie.  Just wow.  Die in a fire.  If you’re serious you’re a rapist, if you’re not, you’re just horribly NOT funny or clever.

  • Carmen Sandiego

In order to be genuinely terrified, the woman would have to be getting rape?  WTF are you talking about?  I am genuinely terrified when anybody touches me in anyway without my permission unless I’m in a crowded room.  Sexual assault, and assault in general isn’t just rape.

  • Carmen Sandiego

Mle, 1 in 3 men will NOT be raped in their lifetime, like women will.  One of the leading unnatural causes of death for a woman is at the hands of a boyfriend or husband.  The statistics are nothing like this for men as victims.

Feminism is not about man-hating, obviously.  I know (and date) many feminist guys who I adore with all my nerve and sinew.  They know that rape and touching someone without their permission is no laughing matter.

  • Carmen Sandiego

What do you think the ‘go down easier’, the terrified expression of the women being held by the grinning man, and the alcohol signifies in this ad?

  • Carmen Sandiego

Any contact without consent is assault though it might not be sexual assault in nature.  The term ‘go down easy’ refers to a sexual situation.  “It’s a pity that women are so touchy and seriously over-sensitive”.  1 in 3 women will be raped in their lifetime, just so you know.  That number is probably higher because rape is reported so rarely, because people like you promote a culture where women are just ‘overreacting’ to being touched and prodded without their consent.

I never suggested assaulting a woman is okay under any circumstances. This is an ad with a slightly ambiguous photo open for interpretation and it seems everyone here is screaming murder. I’m sorry to have gotten involved. It’s a shitty ad campaign at any rate.

I’m not a conservative redneck, no, and I do not know what all women want;  I ask them politely.

Uh, she’s choking, and he’s doing the Heimlich maneuver.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

I agree with Carmen, it doesn’t at all look like she’s running from something she wants but is logistically unable to “accept”.

This ad would have been much better if it had kept the tongue-in-cheek humor of the text, but the picture was something that conveyed a tense negotiation of sorts between a man and woman. . . perhaps while semi-nude in bed.  That way, the ad could have been interpreted as appealing to both men and women, because it would be ambiguous about who’s trying to get the other to “go down”.

As it is though, it’s disturbingly rape-y. And the look of terror on the woman’s face is enough to make me believe that anyone who finds humor in this DOES indeed think that rape is totally not a big deal.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

Sure, but it’s not terribly difficult to conjure.

Just imagine the face you would make if a big, muscle-bound biker-type was chasing you around so he could pin you down and force a huge dildo up your tiny little butthole. I bet your expression would look a lot like hers.

(assuming this is something you wouldn’t be into, and I really don’t mean that flippantly)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

Oh puh-lease, what a load of BS!! That is NOT “drunkface”, and I guarantee you no chick you know has made that face because she’s drunk and falling down. Most people who get that drunk don’t even notice that they’ve fallen down until they’re lying on the floor (and sometimes not even then).

Besides, it is quite clear that he’s pulling her back into his lap.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

Your goofy explanation doesn’t jibe with the text. To restate huffnno’s understated point, the texts says “Goes down smoothly. . . Unlike some people.” So she would have to be eating people for your Heimlich manuever thing to be anything other than completely moronic.

Thank god for Grey Goose. I hate boycotting things I actually enjoy.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

Interesting. Your interpretation of how most people on this thread see this ad is a bit off. I don’t think hardly anyone is thinking he’s trying to force her a slurpjob on her but she doesn’t want to go down on him, and that’s what he’s trying to force.

After all, the text says “Goes Down Smoothly. . .”, not “Let’s You Go Down Smoothly”.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

Oh come on Sean, you’re requesting sources for information that is COMPLETELY made up. Not very polite of you. Tsk, tsk.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UJXVNSJHB5DVUBAEERHXQQNKTI Lisa

I have to disagree with some of what you said. I too have been a victim of sexual assault (1 in 3–and I honestly thought I’d be in the 2 in 3 that it didn’t happen to. . . til it happened).

Companies risk backlash when they use misogynistic advertising, because women can vote with their dollars just like any other consumer. But that won’t happen if women are merely silent when they feel outraged about this sort of thing. I think women should be vigilant and vocal about making sure sexual assault isn’t trivialized. You can already tell, just from the small amount of men posting on this thread, that some men think women are overly-dramatic about the reality of rape. As a victim yourself, you should know that it is a very real threat.

While you claim that domestic violence against men is becoming an epidemic, that term is subjective and doesn’t mean a whole lot unless it’s in context. And the real context is that, while domestic violence against men IS on the rise (and has been for awhile), it doesn’t come close to reaching a level where it can be justly compared to violence against women. As Carmen mentioned above, death at the hands of a spouse or significant other is a leading cause of non-natural death for women. The same cannot be said about causes of death for men. When that happens, I think you will be justified in comparing the two. Not to mention, in terms of sexual assaults by strangers, it’s a WHOLE lot more likely to happen to you if you’re female than if you’re male. Same goes for rape by acquaintance.

And finally, in terms of men being depicted as dopes on TV. . . I believe that is mostly motivated by the fact that viewers got bored with the decades-old trope that the man is the gut, heart and brains of a family. My best recollection of TV shows when I was a child, the dad character was much more central to the story than the mom. I’m thinking of Cosby Show, Family Ties, the one where Alan Thicke was the dad. And honestly, women are the ones who get paid 0.75 on the dollar compared to men, so I don’t think depicting men as idiots on TV is all that harmful to the average man in real life. After all, this is a man’s world.

I think it is as funny as domestic violence and assault on men. So this ad is funny. And this planet would anyway be better of without most feminazis who parade as women. We would be happy just to have real women like Dr Helen Smith around. The rest of you are just not needed here.

F U Carmen were you raped before? it was just meant as a funny ad and it sure is ..the guys facial expression=golden

you are all to stupid to realize that the point of the ad is to be ambiguous. it can be interpreted many different ways and that ingeniousness is what is supposed to make it amusing. they overestimated the intelligence of the common folk and when everyone went RAPE OMG! they pulled it. smart people should be able to see that it was actually quite a tactful way to make a “joke” regarding peoples sensitive natures. in a parallel, alcohol works the same way making people more/less sensitive than they already are. or maybe a pr guy or ad exec (whose jobs basically depend on NOT offending poeple) wouldnt go that deep and just thought Fuck! you know what? mysogyny is HILARIOUS! lets go with that! think about it…

Oh I wouldn`t say “women’s violence against men” is all fake. I know plenty of guys who get stabbed, smashed, or other wise fucked up because their wife or girlfriend was crazy.

  • http://profiles.google.com/vulpisfoxfire Christopher Forsyth

The thought that she’s *choking* on something and that the guy is in the process of grabbing her to try and do a Heimlich comes to mind–which would certainly jive with the ‘goes down smoothly’ concept, though it doesn’t quite explain the expression on his face (other than possibly ‘I *told* you to chew it better!’ or some such). Admittedly, that’s still pretty thin considering that they could have picked a much better picture to use to represent that.

OTOH, if it’s supposed to be a case of ‘going down’, isn’t she facing the wrong way anyway?

    Or to put it simply:
Women’s violence against men on TV is imaginary.
Men’s violence against women on TV is also imaginary.
Men’s violence against women in real life is not imaginary.
Women’s violence against men in real life is also not imaginary.

Or to put it even more simply: Learn to tell the difference between TV and real life…

And what emotion, exactly, is this woman modeling? No one is attacking either of the models for being in the ad . . . they are just doing a job. They are attacking Belvedere for having what is apparently the tackiest marketing team in history- they apparently thought it would be a good idea to have two models insinuate sexual assault.

Or maybe that is the face YOUR partner makes when you are trying to get down. Personally when I make that face it is not because I am feeling accommodating or affectionate. What POSITIVE emotion does this make you feel about the company? How are they selling Vodka to ANYONE but men who think that rape is funny?

Persuasive technique. Google it before you start trying to explain the entricities of marketing to the masses.

  • http://idleprimate.blogspot.ca/ idleprimate

neither will 1 in 3 women be raped in their lifetime, and violence is not a leading cause of death for women. time and time again these silly hysterical statements, so useful for a political charge, have been shown to be patently false.  How can you even believe it?  have 33% of your women frineds been raped?  Have most of the women in your life disappeared because men killed them?   take your hate propaganda to a woman’s circle where no one will call you to task.

  • http://idleprimate.blogspot.ca/ idleprimate

haul out and repeat  fake statistics(if they are ever questioned fall back on the old ‘crimes are under reported argument–then there is not truth but the myths).  ramp it up with the completely out of thin air ‘men as the leading cause of death in women’

Minimize violence against men and how acceptable it is in our culture.  Then minimize the sheer tidal wave of misandry, and then rationalize it then justify it.

good to see there same dismissals always apply for anything not in the party line.

also, during my 25yrs in the work force, i have always received the same wage for the same job as any woman.  On the other hand, I have been ineligible for many jobs, for my entire adult life, because most of the hiring is going to women or some other group that has a loud victim lobby.

you say this is a  man’s world.  I see little evidence of this.  In Canada, all laws concerning domestic conflict skew heavily in favour of women.  It is virtually impossible for a woman to be guilty of a domestic crime.  Family law also skews heavily toward women.  Women as a group are the one’s that only a fool would risk offending.  Women control all reproductive rights.  Women outnumber and outperform men in schools at all levels. boys are three times as likely to be medicated due to not fitting into the larger culture.  Medical research dollars skew towards illness that effects predominantly women.  Various financial and social aid for women skews heavily toward women.  Men continue to work virtually all of the more dangerous and less pleasant jobs, jobs with more health risks.  Men are at greater risks for all kinds of ailments but receive less funding for treatment.  Men are scapegoated for social ills that are the product of decisions and choices made by both sexes.  Feminine has practically become a synonym for good or normal, and masculine for bad or abnormal.

I could keep going and going here, but I can’t think of any particular way this is a man’s world.  And the world where we were working together for equality, was replaced by an angry unrelenting bid for power that started at least 40 years ago and has been massively successful.   The only thing it does not do is acknowledge the system wide success it has had.

Die in a F? It sucks. There’s no doubt. They should issue a statement of apology, maybe make some donations to womens crisis and domestic violence, and sex crimes causes, and we should all get over it.
