Romney Son: “Growing Up, We Never Had A Nanny Or A ‘Mommy’s Helper’”

Many stepped out with pitchforks and stones when political consultant Hilary Rosen said last week that Ann Romney “has actually never worked a day in her life,” but one of Ann’s five sons, Ben reacted with poise in a new Facebook note about the now-viral (and tired) scandal, which he said did not give his mother the credit she deserved for managing her boys alone.

“Growing up, we never had a nanny or a ‘mommy’s helper.’ Never went to daycare,” the fourth Romney son wrote. “I was just one out of five, but always felt like I was the most important thing in her life. For my Mom to raise us 5 boys, the way she did, was, in my mind, the most demanding – and hopefully rewarding – work she could have done.”

Ben, who has a 3-year-old daughter of his own now, added that his mother had a strong presence in his childhood and supported him in all his endeavors:

“When I left for school in the morning (after she had made me breakfast), she was there. When I came home at the end of the day, she was there. She drove me to HOURS of my sports lessons and competitions (baseball, tennis, basketball, etc), and was my #1 fan in the stands. She encouraged my musical interests, and cheered me on at my piano recitals and high school band concerts. I could go on and on.”

Ben of course was not the first of the Romney kids to bound to Mama Ann’s defense in the aftermath of this mess. Josh Romney tweeted about his mom’s hard work soon after Rosen made the swipe on television, “@AnnDRomney is one of the smartest, hardest working woman [sic] I know. Could have done anything with her life, chose to raise me.”

The Rosen/Ann war is old news now and may never have been that difficult for Ann to endure, but it’s always cute to see young folks stand up for their parents. Better than the alternative that is all too pervasive in the media.

She will be great first lady.  A welcome bit of class.  The current one can’t seem to get her face on tv enough lately.  I can’t remember any other first lady degrading the office with as many appearances on entertainment tv.   It’s sad.

and ps, When you libs call him a liar (and you will) make sure you remember to post your evidence. Thanks!

  • Adrian Havill

Well, they had gardeners who turned out to be illegal. So we know the Romney kids never had to mow the lawn.

  • Anonymous

Wow! Alert the media. The Romneys did not have a Nannie or a helper. Lmao.

    She completely classless like you.

A guy asked to mow my lawn last week and I let him. Created a job for him. Paid him. Did NOT ask to see his papers. Get over yourselves.

I live in a neighborhood where houses run around 175-200 grand and a lot of people here have people cut their lawn.  What’s your point.

and ps, I’ve never asked any of them if they are illegal.

  • Gloves Donahue

The Romneys are a fine family and the media is making a big mistake if they attack them.

This is not “old” or “tired” news at all. Dems would like it to be, though.

How do you know Ann Romney is a “welcome bit of class”? And what do you have against Michelle Obama other than she’s younger, in great shape and smart?
Amazing how the haters cant like someone without hating another…must be the Fox News influence

    Thank you.

It’s hard to believe that the romneys are whining over the comment from Rosen. But the truth is, mittens has never had much of a back bone.

Kudos to Ann for staying at home to raise her boys.  I did that also after quitting my job.  I found it very difficult to see that my child got good care while I worked.  She screamed and cried every time I left her at the babysitters.  I wanted to pursue my career and we needed the extra salary, but I determined my children’s needs were more important.  It is better for the mother to be at home during their child’s earlier years but it is not always possible as most women willattest.  What Ann is not saying is most working mothers have two jobs, not one.   they do twice as much work and have twice as many problems.  Most women would rather be at home with their kids but our society today has taken women out of the home and away from their children which is the cause of many ills in our Nation.  As Americans, we should promote a society that values our children above making money for the future good of our nation.

Yes, they did.  And those illegals worked for the lawn service, not the Romneys.

I find it interesting the liberal posters tend to write posts that smear anyone who isn’t a liberal democrat.  And the existence of the FoxNewsNetwork upsets them a bit more than it should, but, of course, I believe that I’m not as easily disturbed as they are, so I’m not prone to getting all bent out of shape when that Network presents news differently than the liberal networks do.  However, I could be wrong in my assessment because I am not smart enough to understand why they feel compelled to snipe at Fox in a way that is, at best, curiously shabby.

These posts are more entertaining than the articles are, and just as informative on some of the subjects being discussed as is the original article at the top of the page.  However, it still appears that some of the posters write really odd stuff that accomplishes very little as far as the political subject matter is concerned.  Be that as it may, It’s fun reading them.

All the things that the Romney son has listed here ARE things that I also did, as best as I could.  After I got my two sons off to school I went to work sometimes getting home as late as 8:00 PM, depending on the day.  Then I got up the next morning and started all over, and I could go on and on.  What makes Ann Romney so much different or more special than me?  She did what millions of other mothers do every single day and no one pats them on the back and declares that they are the voices for women of America.  That was the point that should have been made.  I am not interested in what Ann Romney knows or doesn’t know.  I am interested in the man who may be President.

That face must drive you insane!!!!! Or is it the fact that it is a “black” face that really drives you insane.  Care to site some figures about how our present “First Lady” has been on television more than others.  Or maybe it’s just the fact that she has more important and intelligent things to say than previous First Ladies have. I would love to see your reaction when we have a Jewish First Lady in the White House one day.  Bet that would even be worse.

  • Serenity_NM

I agree. I hired a young Vietnamese man to help with yard work last week. I didn’t ask but he told me, with pride, that he came here 18 years ago, became a citizen and now has two small children. He is proud to have a small business of his own. He worked hard and I happily referred him to a neighbor who also gave him a days work. It’s how America is supposed to work, I think. Obama has generated such divisiveness that we forget that.

  • annonmouse

The son coming out and saying they didn’t have help is just not necessary. In fact it is a pathetic attempt to paint Ann Romney as a good mother, which was never in question.   I don’t think anyone is saying she was a bad mother, people are saying she has no idea of what it is like to be a mother who also has to take a job that pays to make ends meet.  Clearly The Romneys and the right are taking this faux controversy for all it is worth because they have little else to jump on.  I mean sure stir up a story over Ann Romney because that is important!  Ignore the fact that women across the country are being violated by republican lawmakers.
Ann Romney perhaps should focus more on the good things her staying at home brought to her family instead of this moronic political point scoring. The Romney’s will lose on this matter if they continue, but sadly it is all they have.

I think it is excellent that Mrs Romney had the choice to stay at home with her children.  Clearly the family financially could afford to do so.
Sadly Mrs Romney and more importantly her wannabe POTUS husband have failed to address how those not in the same financial position as the Romneys are expected to do it.  They don’t understand economically how women who raise children and have to hold down a job to financially provide for their family do it. I am sure there are thousands of women who would love to be in the position to stay at home with their children but cannot afford to do it.
As a Conservative Romney will not be happy at the government providing financial aid to these women and children.  So the Romney clan can crow all they want about their lives they are not talking about everyday American families and nothing they say is going to change that.

I do hope Romney grows a pair soon, he is a weak candidate at best, but this tactic is making him weaker by the minute.

And so you resent the success actually earned by someone? Really?

“Alert yourself” to the fact that Mrs. Romney is a breast cancer survivor and has MS. If she had needed household help while also raising five children it would be pretty petty of anyone to attack her for that.  Just saying…

  • Dan

I assume you are right-winge/conservative, if so, you’re also pro-illegal immigration?

  • Dan

So, you’re opposed to a pro-military family charity? Becuase that’s what the class of a First Lady has been promoting and supporting all over the place for the last year (along with the Second Lady). They noticed that military families don’t have the support that a nation that is at constant war should give to them, and so she has done her bit to further their cause, i guess this upsets you. Or, is it her other cause, the let’s help children understand the benefits of healthy eating and not dying of obesity cause, that offends you?

  • Anonymous

  • Danlee12345467

Completely agree. The only problem is the reason less moms can afford to stay at home and raise their children, is because 1 party in particular as shaped the economy so that it benefits only the already rich and the burden of sustaining that system falls at the feet of middle class families, who in order to just provide for their families have to now bring in at least 2 incomes.
Ann Romney had the choice to stay at home and ensure the best for her kids, most moms don’t get that choice. And Mitt Romney’s past and future policies only ensure that things get worse for middle class families, while they’ll get better for the already rich. If Ann Romney was truly pro-(all)-moms, then she’d have a word with her husband about his economic policies.

  • Anonymous

I have no problem with Ann staying home to raise her kids.  My issue is that in our society, having “a choice” is a “luxury for the rich.”  Life’s not fair I understand, but when something so fundamental as raising your children is reserved for “the affluent”, our society stinks.

  • Dan

You’re statement needs a point by point analysis:
    1. …That’s he done everything to pretend didn’t happen. And also, you’re pro-Romneycare? Hope you’re also pro-Obamacare, wouldn’t want you being a hypocrite now.
    2. …Again that he’s done everything to pretend didn’t happen, otherwise it’d mean everybody knowing about his ’25 years of’ shutting down factories, losing jobs instead of creating them becuase that was the best/easiest way to make money, sending perfectly viable companies into administration and bankruptcy at the expense of it’s employees in order to make huge gains. And before you start, all of these critiques were dug up by people on his own ‘team’.
    3. Who doesn’t love their country. Before you throw in some idiotic rant about Obama, please remember Mitt chose the French countryside and mormonism before Vietnam and America. So the only real chance he got to show his true patriotism, he flunked it.
    4. He had already made 100s of millions in the private sector, are you saying only near billionaires should be elected into office?
    5. Most of his charity  went /goes to the mormon church, who i’m sure do plenty of good work in their community, but they also spend 100s of millions on things like lie-filled opposition to marriage equality (even if you’re anti-gay, you can’t believe spending $10mil+ on pro-prop 8 is better then spending it on the poor).
    6. Class? Which class would that be?
    7. Economic experience? Please see points 1 and 2. Smarts? um, they’re both Harvard men.
    8. Wrong. Jsut saying he’s pro-growth and economic responsibility doesn’t mean that he is. Romney’s economic policies are more Bush than Bush’s were, and if you’ve already forgotten about how that turned out, well the economy hasn’t. Cutting taxes for the already rich and not making much of a dent in cutting spending is a formula for disaster that was played out for the first 8 years of this century, Romney wants to go back to that and Obama doesn’t.

This country is 16+ trillion in debt, X, 2 = default time and the market crash of the 30ies will look like play time. No one who makes 200 million is stupid, we elect people who never ran a 7-11 and say, tax the rich. This public elected the people who have placed this debt card on our backs.  The remarks about Romney, ( he ain’t like us ) ( thank heaven ) Football players are paid better than our president, we have what we pay for.
The US government wasn’t formed to be a nation wide check for people who won’t work and can’t manage money. Tell this public we are 16 trillion in debt, they go duuh. If you want to give your neighbor half your check, give it to him. Most think, if it comes from Washington DC it’s free, it’s not, and 16 trillion in debt proves it. Will this public wake up and put people in office who know how to run a business ? We have, exactly what we elected and the debt to prove it.

“Life’s not fair I understand, but when something so fundamental as

I might have taken your lament regarding yet another societal inequity seriously if I had never met any couples of modest means (i.e., less than $50,000/yr. household income) who’ve sacrificed to make it possible for either parent to stay home to raise their kids.  Including my younger brother and his wife, I’ve personally known several
    couples who’ve done just that.

Lest you think they don’t exist, Google “SAHM support groups.”

They bear witnesses to the fact that your assessment has far more to do with your own choices than with the phony “societal inequity” Progressives would have us believe exists for the “the affluent.”

    You can’t.
The Romney’s are wonderful examples to the citizens of this country:
A man who gave his inheritence to charity and made his OWN living, while providing jobs.
A woman who raised her OWN children and cooked her OWN family’s meals.

These are the things that our country is missing. The lack of Romney values is destroying the United States of America!

Let’s face it, guys, we should have held on tightly to the 1950s.  Back then, the women generally worked from home running the family operation, and the kids mowed the lawns. Now the women has a career, many abortions, and adopts a foreign kid. The family hires one foreigner to do the house work, another foreigner to mow the lawn.  This is a one way path to collapse for this country.  It’s just a matter of time.

Choices. I find it troubling that so many “Moms” have to work outside the home. Why is this necessary?
Let’s see only 25% of children born today are born inside a Marriage. That means 75% are born outside of marriage!  This is the basic issue. The erosion of traditional family and moral values.
Yes, many kids did have a father and mother, but then divorce happened. Choices – again the throw away relationship mentality breaks up families – fighting, selfishness, adultery, money issues, etc. all lead to broken families unless BOTH parents are dedicated to fixing themselves, forgiving one another, becoming less selfish, and having a reasonable expectation for a real-life relationship instead of what is seen in movies and in sit-coms on TV.
Our society has its values all mixed up – the goal for family unity is being replaced with personal empowerment and “just having as much fun as I can before i die”.
There are very sad stories, health challenges, economic trials, injuries, etc. that can affect a marriage and a family’s financial situation, but these can be overcome if the goal of BOTH parents is to “stick together” and “find a way to overcome” the outside challenges so their family can survive and make it to better days ahead. This means having FAITH and HOPE and WORK together with a single united heart.
This Rosen issue is more about the “War Against The Traditional Family” than about women working. If the TRADITIONAL Family fails, then our society will also Fail.

Who did the house cleaning, laundry, floors, vacuuming, making the beds, ironing, putting the laundry away, picking up all the toys, cooking, food shopping, etc?

Why have you turned away from the real story to attack the First Lady of the United States.

The Romney boy is a liar just like his father.  Are you kiddin’ me…..she washed the floorssssssss, cleaned the bathroomssssss, CLEANED THE TOILETSSSSSS, mowed the lawnssssss, washed the clothes for over 20 years with NO HELP.
Do you really believe that or are u like the Romney’s…making up stories.

Just wait, besides the Latinos who mowed his lawn, other helpers will now come out and tell the truth about this family who has a habit of lying, that is, if old Mitt doesn’t take out the checkbook and shut them up.

The First Lady represents us well and I’m very proud of her.

I betcha her name is NOT Mrs. Romney.  These people are such liars.

Really, who paid for their services?  Stop!  You can’t make apple pie out of lemons.

These people, the Romney’s, are big  liars.  Notice how they have hidden money in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland…Americans hiding money not to pay taxes.  Is this the kind of man you want to represent this country.  OMG, what happen to our values.

How am I making up the 99%? You do recall that those people sat in a park for a few months, right?

People who run a business are greedy moochers- that type of loser won’t help America.

Racist pig.   The Romney’s don’t seem to have any chemistry- just ill-gotten gains.

Hilary Rosen is so jealous of Ann Romney, she can’t stand it!
Neither of these women (Clinton or Rosen) would ever admit to the fact that this country AND it’s children would be a whole lot better off if women would stay home after having kids. And before you all go wacko, ever heard of PLANNED PREGNACY?? What happened to planning and PREPARING for children? Waiting until you can AFFORD children? Why do people have children if they are just going to have someone else raise them? It isn’t as though we are running out of people around here.
    ….. Anyway, just a thought …..

The 99% isn’t about hating people with money. It is about trying to get the same treatment from the government that they seem to reserve for the 1%.

Do you have proof their gardeners were illegal??? Why doesn’t Obama deport illegals. You’re just another Obamaite and Jackass.

  • RobertA.

Dan, reading your post is an abortion of the English language. ie. right-wingE..????
    Another Jackass in our midst.

  • RobertA.

FYI, the 1% for the most part is who creates jobs and keeps the economy going. Barack Hussein Obama destroyed jobs. When he became president gasoline was $1.83 now it’s over $4.00. Wake up and smell the fumes.

  • RobertA.

peppy10, you are another UNINFORMED Jackass. Romney did not hide his money anywhere and paid over $3Million in taxes. Read the newspaper. oops excuse me, you can’t read or just cannot comprehend.

  • RobertA.

Great shape???? maybe if you like BIG ASSES.

This is a simple minded analysis. Where are all the jobs from the 1% who have made out quite well while people like you have not. Secondly, most 4th graders understand the president has
little if any impact on gas prices. You’re welcome.

I can agree with that. However, I’m not sure their message was conveyed properly.

  • Sarah Ince

That’s funny since until Romney was Governor the boys were doing the Yard work and the first place they lived in was an Apartment at BYU which they paid $75 a month.

Do you just make up your own facts LOL???
