How Much Would You Pay to Figure Out What Mystery Liquor Madoff Was Hoarding?

We were psyched to hear more about Bernie Madoff’s wine and liquor collection auction yesterday (after all, who doesn’t want to spend 10 times market value on mini bottles of Bombay Gin that have been touched by a notorious Ponzi schemer?). Of course, there are some unknowns about the collection, as well. As CNBC rightly points out, there’s no telling whether or not Madoff took proper care of his aging wines (or, even more unlikely, whether they were properly preserved after being seized).
The most intriguing part of the auction, however, was only revealed today. Apparently one of the bottles up for sale has unknown contents. That’s right — a bottle of mystery juice is on the auction block.
Dealbreaker wouldn’t hazard a guess, so we’ll pass on that as well. In the meantime, here are the details: The liquid is contained in a 12-sided crystal decanter that’s been completely sealed off by wax. The decanter has no markings and stands nearly nine inches tall, while the liquid inside looks brown (scotch, perhaps?).
We’re not sure, but it would appear that no one has tried opening it yet (which would seem like an obvious move, if it were up to me). This, however, could be a great sales tactic — we’d imagine there are enough exorbitantly wealthy people out there who would be driven insane wondering what secret elixir Madoff was hoarding.
