10:45 am, July 19th | by Laura Simmons
What makes a company “good” for women? Does the number of female board members matter? Does the number of weeks of maternity leave? At what point do you know what makes a company “pro-woman”? As graduation comes closer and closer, I (along with the rest of The Jane Dough ) started asking myself those questions. The result? Our definitive guide to the top 15 pro-women Fortune 500 companies.
Of course, much of this list is subjective, but after working with key women’s groups like Catalyst and NAFE , we think we came up with the best list of standards for working women. Many factors were taken into consideration for this piece including the percentage of women in the workplace, childcare options, health insurance plans, percentage of women board members, maternity leave options, company diversity statements, and the current Fortune ranks.
So, we asked a few companies to explain why they are the best places for working women. Here it is:

Fifth place goes to Estee Lauder!
-Health Insurance: Yes & Wellness Plan

Honestly, who wouldn't want to work for the oh-so-glamorous Estee Lauder company, which includes Bobbi Brown (my go-to for natural looking make-up), Clinique and AVEDA? It's no surprise then that a company who markets to women would want to employ as many talented and professional women as possible! With an impressive 42.9 percent of women on its Board of Directors, Estee Lauder claims our number-5 spot. The company's efforts to promote breast cancer awareness are impressive -- as was its 2011, $8.5 million donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Still not sold? Estee Lauder employees also have the benefit of having a "half-day" on their birthdays... Oh yea.

Do you like cars and business? Maybe General Motors is the place for you! This American car company is making big strides to help promote women in the workplace. GM currently employs over 30,000 women at their company worldwide and its global workforce is comprised of 15-percent women while their North America workforce is comprised of 31-percent women. Fun fact: GM is one of the largest employers of female engineers in the U.S.
In addition, for all you soon-to-be college grads, GM has relationships with many colleges -- including all-women's Spelman College in Atlanta -- where they recruit for non-technical hiring needs. GM's Design team hosts career fairs targeted at women and they recently hosted 150 high school students (of which 70 percent were female) to promote interest in automotive design at an early stage.
But while GM employs a lot of women, it also has a lot of female leaders! At GM you can find leaders like Mary Barra, Senior Vice President, Global Product Development and Alicia Boler-Davis, Vice President of Global Quality and U.S. customer experience. (Another fun fact: Marry Barra is the highest ranking woman in the auto industry.) Way to go GM!

-Health Insurance: Yes and guidance to secure financial future
-# Of Female Board Members:4/11, 36.4 percent
-Maternity Leave: Yes
-Diversity Hiring Statement: Yes
-Fortune 500 Rank: #38
Target is definitely one of my favorite stores and I was so excited to learn that they do a lot to promote women in business. At the end of 2011, the senior leadership was 36.7 percent female with four female Board of Director seats out of 11 total. In addition, the majority of managers at Target are female.
My question to Target management is this: If I were to work here, do I get first dibs on the special fashion lines? (i.e Tucker for Target?)

14. 2. Publix Supermarket
Next on our list, Publix Supermarket!
-Percent Of Female Workers: 48 percent
-Childcare: Yes (at the Lakefield, FL office)
-Health Insurance: Yes
-# Of Female Board Members: 3/9, 33.3 percent
-Maternity Leave: Yes
-Diversity Hiring Statement: Yes, 38 percent minority workforce
-Fortune 500 Rank: #106
While a late-'90s class-action gender discrimination suit is a black mark in the company's history, Publix has moved beyond that to become one of the premier places for women to work with an impressive list of benefits. But those aren't the only reasons you should add this company to your "Apply For Job" pile.
While offering the traditional benefits (childcare, maternity leave, health insurance etc.) Publix has also made big strides with their diversity hiring programs. Managers attend diversity workshops known as "Developing Cultural Competence" which broadens their awareness of the value in attracting and retaining associates from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. In addition, Publix has doubled the number of female and minority managers in their retail stores in the past 10 years. Finally, Publix has been awarded for their diversity practices and programs and have received a Diversistar Award for excelling in promoting workplace diversity practices, ranked #13 on the Corporate Social Responsibility Index by Reputation Institute, and Catalyst Blue Ribbon Board of Fortune 500 Companies with Multiple Women Directors. Even better, Publix is the largest company in the nation that is 50-percent or more employee-owned through an employee-stock-ownership-plan at no cost to the employee. This is definitely a cool bonus.
