Beyoncé, How Could You? [UPDATED]

It’s no secret that we at The Jane Dough are big Beyoncé fans. How could you not be? When we read the GQ profile that reveals the existence of the Beyoncé Archive, featuring every photo and interview of Queen B ever taken, in addition to thousands of hours of video footage, one of us may or may not have made a joke about having our ashes scattered there that might not really have been a joke at all. But it appears that our lady of Everything Awesome has betrayed us. Between this and the freezing cold weather in New York City this week, I’m about ready to pack it in.

From ABC’s Emily Friedman:

And:

Beyoncé, we’re friends so I’m going to address you directly. How could you think that you could do me like that/ running lip-synching behind my back?

Now I don’t know what to think or feel. There better be some kind of weather or illness-related explanation for why Bey couldn’t bring her A-game to the 57th presidential inauguration, or I don’t see how I can go on. Do you hear me, Beyoncé? YOU BETTER HAVE THE FLU!

UPDATE: Jezebel quotes a tipster who claims that, while Beyoncé did use a backing track, she did indeed sing live? Who do we believe? And if this is true, why does the Marine Corps band hate Beyoncé?

I don’t believe it, if you heard it there’s no way it sounded lip-synced…

She sang live into the microphone (rather than mime),the microphone however was not itself ‘on’. Instead, everyone in person and on TV heard the pre-recorded version. Thus, purely on semantics she can technically say she sang live, but of course no one but Beyonce heard her. As a clarkson fan myself, I’m just glad she remains a true artist and honest person.

Did anyone pay their hard-earned money to hear a live concert? If not, then no one was betrayed. Beyonce was not the main act, and if there was any worry that the band-sync would not work, then taking the safe route was a good decision. Just like the flags and banners, the music was a setting for the main event, the oath of office for President. You might say she was just part of the “ambeyonce.”
