Long Overdue Perfume For Nerds: Fragrance ‘For Booklovers’
1:30 pm, June 3rd | by Laura Donovan
Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is wrong about a lot of things, but he did a swell job packaging Geza Schoen, Wallpaper* magazine, and Gerhard Steidl’s new fragrance, Paper Passion, which is marketed as perfume “for booklovers.”
But the product, which is placed in book-like packaging, isn’t only for nerds. Steidl’s website describes the rationale behind creating the product as such:
This is an opportunity to celebrate all the glorious sensuality of books, at a time when many in the industry are turning against them. The idea is that is should relax you, like when you read a book, to a level of meditation and concentration. Paper passion has evolved into something quite beautiful and unique. To wear the smell of a book is something very chic. Books are players in the intellectual world, but also in the world of luxury.
The last line of the description is spot on, especially with the invasion of e-books and concern that paperbacks and hardcovers will eventually go extinct. Lagerfeld knew what he was talking about when he said, “The smell of a freshly printed book is the best smell in the world,” so maybe he should spend more time reading and improving his own scent and devote less energy to poking fun at people’s weight and jobs.
