The More You Know

People Out West Value Sex More Than Any Other U.S. Region

Almost every time I tell New Yorkers that I was raised in the bay area, they ask, “Why in God’s name did you leave and come here, you silly girl?!” It’s an inquiry I’ve never been able to fully answer, and given the results of a new survey that found people in western states value sex more than folks of any other part of the country do, I have yet another reason to question my sanity for trading in eternal sunshine and friendly crunchy granola types for tiny sidewalks and gawking city dwellers.

Upon gathering information from 10 million survey participants, Chemistry.com found that eight of the top 10 cities that value sex the most are located in California, and seven of the hotspots are in the southern part of the state (oh, SoCal). Interviewing people of both genders, researchers took three pieces of data — cities where women value sex the most, cities where men value sex the most, and cities where sex is valued most overall — to compile information on the importance of sex in relationships based on each region. As we just noted, Californians seem to put a lot of weight into the value of sex, but the other two cities that made the list were Hoboken, New Jersey and Miami, Florida, neither of which are surprises to us.

Cities in the Midwestern region, on the other hand, value sex the least in relationships (overall, that is). The places that made that list are: Lubbock, Texas, Toledo, Ohio, Schenectady, New York, Lincoln, Nebraska, Springfield, Missouri, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Akron, Ohio, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dayton, Ohio, and Norfolk, Virginia.

Women out west value sex the most in states such as Colorado, Arizona, Washington, and of course, California. Granted a relationship is unsustainable on sex alone, but considering all the other obvious benefits of residing out in the wild wild west — fewer competitive rats, warmer weather, happier people and beaches — this is just another reason why moving there would be a good decision for pretty much anybody. As they say, west coast best coast.
