About Time: Candy Crowley First Female Presidential Debate Moderator In 20 Years

Excellent news, ladies: CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley will moderate the second presidential debate this year. She’s the first woman asked for moderate in 20 years.

Crowley, who (no biggie) we totally suggested should moderate a debate in a recent post, will lead a “town hall-style debate” Oct. 16, according to a statement CNN released today.

In a prepared statement, Crowley sounded thrilled:

“As someone who is in awe and grateful every day  to be  in a country where freedom of the press, free speech and free elections are a way of life, I am wowed, amazed and excited by the opportunity to moderate a 2012 presidential debate.”

Sounds about right.

The move to install Crowley in the moderator’s seat comes after increased pressure to include more women in the presidential debates. A group of three teens from New Jersey led a petition this summer they (intuitively) called “It’s Time For A Female Moderator.” Their effort attracted over 100,000 signees.

The lesson here? Teen girls get stuff done.

I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t realize it has been twenty years since we had a female moderator at a presidential debate.  I’m assuming this year won’t be an aberration but a new normal.  Assuming and hoping, I should say.

In case you are wondering about Ms. Crowley’s viewpoints, she said Saturday that the Ryan selection as VP  “looks a little bit like some sort of ticket death wish.” Now, Ms. Crowley is professional enough to sort of attribute that to unnamed Republicans. A skilled journalist uses unnamed sources, or attributes ideas to to “some say” when they are speaking their own opinion but don’t want to be seen as doing so.

LIberal hack…I’ve always thought she leans to the right.

Have you seen the makeup of the commission who made these choices?   I’m surprised Romney agreed to it.

  • Benny

    She does.

  • Anonymous

well, she’s better than her evil sister Monica Crowley… who LOOKS like Candy but tastes like untreated sewage.

  • Benny

    It’s a good choice,I guess.

I know Imma get bashed for this, but I’d have really liked to see Rachel Maddow moderate a Prez debate, cause she’s super smart.

Still,Candy is a good choice.Even though she leans right, she’s mostly fair.

    We know you are.
    It’s part of your name.

She does lean to the right, but only to keep from falling onto her left side.

    University of Denver, Denver, CO

    Vice presidential debate

    Centre College, Danville, KY

Second presidential debate (town meeting format)
    Tuesday, October 16
Moderator: Candy Crowley, Chief Political Correspondent, CNN and Anchor, CNN’s State of the Union
    Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY

    Third presidential debate (foreign policy)
    Monday, October 22
Moderator: Bob Schieffer, Chief Washington Correspondent, CBS News and Moderator, Face the Nation
    Lynn University, Boca Raton, FL

Liberals have consistently moderated presidential debates for decades. This is hardly a deviation from that trend.

If a centrist or conservative ever moderated a debate there would be no chance of a liberal executive.

Liberals can only handle debate when the game is fixed and then only part of the time.

  • Benny

    Hey,wingnut.

    I said she was a good choice,didn’t I?

No need for some batshit here,so calm down,I’m trying to get drunk peacefully,k?

We hope it is a battle in the war on women that has been won by the just side.

Bob Schieffer regularly editorializes on Face The Nation, is named as a moderator, and no one questions his credentials as a journalist.

The single criterion for being a moderator is basically when people are confused about the political stances of a journalist.  Ask a progressive if Crowley is a despicable righty, and they all say so.  Ask a right wingnut if she’s a lefty, they assert it most positively.  That would not be true for Maddow:  many progressives would own Maddow.
