We normally think of Abraham Lincoln as a bastion of progressiveness (however reluctant) and medicine as a field rife with hot male and female doctors hooking up (maybe that last thing is just my problem after spending nearly a decade with the nutjobs on Grey’s Anatomy), but we’re going to have to adjust our perceptions after reading this Atlantic piece on the female Union army doctor who was never given her proper due.

It’s unfortunately nothing new to see a once heavily managed and media trained star self-destruct, especially if that star is a woman. What is it about our culture that makes it so difficult for young female stars to keep it together — a lack of support? Scrutiny that their male counterparts are able to avoid? We’ve seen it with Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and now Amanda Bynes. Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake, Zac Efron, Justin Bieber and all of the Jonas brothers have made it into young adulthood with their sanity seemingly intact. Hopefully the difficulty Bynes is having now gets resolved, but even if it doesn’t she’s had an amazing career, and much of it before the age of 20. Take a look.
