Pink-Bottled “Chick Beer” Rapidly Expanding Across The Nation


Today’s sign of the ovapocalypse? “Chick Beer,” the beer for women, is expanding nationwide faster than you can say “marketing ploy.” Because women everywhere need beer designed for ladies.

Originally released in September, Chick Beer is now available in available in three states, according to the Idaho Stateman, because apparently Idaho needed more pink-bottled beer.

Don’t know what Chick Beer is? Chick Beer’s name hilariously re-appropriates a common insult you’d use on beverages like Zima and Mike’s Hard Lemonade. But the brand is deadly serious. And what makes Chick Beer truly appropriate for chicks? Well it’s a pretty standard lager, so that’s nothing new. It comes in a pink-labeled bottle with a black dress on the front — okay, getting the genderness there. But the real truth to why Chick Beer is “created just for women?” Let’s turn to its website:

Chick Beer is a craft-brewed light beer that doesn’t taste like a light beer. The flavor is soft, smooth and full-bodied. Yet Chick Beer magically [Ed. Note: !!!] has just 97 calories and 3.5 carbs.

Ahhh, the calories. Calorie magic. And it straight-up murders Amstel Light with fluffy-lady-goodtimes.

The idea behind Chick Beer is noble (well, as noble as a beer can be) — according to a statement from the company, the creators feel it’s “sexist… that the beer industry has totally ignored the female beer drinking market.” That’s totally fair. (Although I’d just as soon see the beer marketing execs leave us alone for a while.)

But the pink, the “Chick,” the low-caloried stereotypes bottled up, especially for beer-drinkers like me? They’re enough to make a gal pass out.

    I like to drink the microbrews and even some of the more mass market friendly brews available. I don’t think that the beer industry has been sexist and has ignored women, because I happen to enjoy many of the beers on the market.

    Perhaps the creators of Chick Beer are thinking about Budweiser and Coors which, frankly, taste like piss anyway. No self-respecting beer drinker would actually enjoy either of those, regardless of the fact that they’re marketed toward men. Men can keep that junk; I’ll take my Allagash White any day!

    I am going to open up a Bar in Boulder Colorado, that only serves “Men’s Beer” just to see how long it takes the weenies in that town to blow a gasket!

    Boulder is like Berkley, Madison or San Fran, those cities stand simple human interaction on its head for some obscure notion of sophistication and relevance.  

    In fact, that is a fairly accurate definition of Liberalism, et.al.

    Maybe this marketing will work on the younger set but for us old “chicks” give me my Guinness and New Castle, I don’t want no girly beer.

    Also, I now refuse to buy anything with a pink ribbon on it. Wake up ladies, odds are you are going to die of heart disease, quit getting freaked out about breast cancer and start eating healthier.

    If you are Detroit Lions fan, I assume you are feeling relief?  I was a Packer fan all my life and from 1970 thru the early 90′s there was only dismal mediocrity, at best.  It must be good to have your team achieve respectability, again?

    My Mom and Dad had season tickets from the late 40s until 1987.  They saw the Pack play at the  old County Fairgrounds in Green Bay (not Milwaukee) with Curly Lambeau as the head coach!  Also, the famous ice Bowl whereby Jerry Kramer (rt. guard) blocked the Cowboys Jethro Pugh, allowing Starr into the end zone.

     Suffice to say, they saw NFL history, more than once.  The old Central (“black and blue” Division)  I dunno, Bruce, it’s just not a “grid Iron” any more?

    It makes me frustrated that there are companies that encourage men to be unhealthy because women are the only ones that are concerned about calories. (Totally a horrible idea to put in a man’s head.)This is just another company that does it, not all women are concerned about their weight, they may as well have made it chocolate too.

    I love those commercials where men are eating these super chunky, red meat-based stews and soups poured over potatoes (the manliest root vegetable of them all!). Come on, America! It’s been proven that ads encourage people to behave in certain ways, so why not use that advertising/brainwashing power for good rather than artery-clogging evil?

    You make a good point; men shouldn’t be encouraged to engage in physically unhealthy activities, and women aren’t the only ones who are concerned with calories. Unfortunately, however, many women are concerned with calories, mostly because the media has communicated to them that they should be concerned with calories. This is the same media that makes us feel that men who like women only want to be with ones who look like supermodels, which is completely erroneous. I’m 24, definitely NOT a supermodel and I’ve dated enough to know that that’s just not true. Unfortunately, there are those companies that capitalize off of these feelings, and Chick Beer is one of them. Maybe they’re doing this simply because they GENUINELY feel that women are concerned with calories, and they’re not trying to promulgate some bizarre and antiquated idea that only women really care that their beer is light in calories.
    I guess, if they wanted to make it even girlier, they could’ve gone the chocolate route. Maybe they could’ve even added some magnesium and omega-3 to combat menstrual cramps (which, by the way, really does work!).

    I’m normally not into fruity beers, there are some that are pretty amazing, especially in an IPA or a stout or a sour ale.

    Speaking of sour ales, the Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale is pretty amazing. It’s got a fruity sweetness that isn’t overpowering (cherries?) and is well-balanced by the lightly bitter aftertaste. It’s very refreshing, and it’s also got a great color (deep red).

    I’ve only ever had it at Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia, but I hear that you can find it in some retailers. I happen to like it — you should look into it!

    As part of that younger set, I can tell you that it won’t. The bottle looks really half-assed; I mean, it’s a REGULAR bottle with neck label with a necklace design on it and a body label with a dress on it. Ghetto.

    And I agree with your statement about the pink! I think breast cancer is a great cause against which to rally, but why is everything that is marketed to females either pink, purple, white, or a pastel form of all other colors? Women are not from Venus, and we’re not from some preppy, Lilly Pulitzer-decorated hell.

    And if women aren’t drinking beer, chances are they’re drinking crappy girly drinks like Malibu Bay Breezes or Cosmos, and this OvaBrew won’t really do much to change that. Unless, it’s REALLY cheap and/or they start pushing special promotions to sororities; that I can see, although they’d still need to do something that ghastly bottle/label design.

    Yes the Packers are the Lions arch rivals. When I was in my early to mid teens, the Packers lost only one game one year. And that of course was to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving day. When I was a kid it seemed to me that the Lions were the only team that could beat the Packers.  I am originally from Detroit.  From your post you obviously lived in Green Bay. And yes the Lions have been pretty pathetic this last decade. I hope that is turning around.
