Colbert Perfectly Sums Up Ann Romney’s Dressage Hobby: ‘NASCAR In A Velvet Top Hat’

If it’s possible, Stephen Colbert may be even more excited about Ann Romney’s Olympic dressage horse than we are.

He’s so excited about Rafalca (the horse’s name is “Rafalca” — love it) that he’s even declaring this summer’s “official sport” dressage. “It’s basically NASCAR in a velvet top hat,” he explained. Too true.

So I looked at some videos of dressage after this segment. I would welcome an equestrian’s two cents on this sport, because to me it just looks like horses walking funny. It’s cool that the horses can do that, but why is it an Olympic sport?

Not a dressage-r but a horsey person with a modest amount of knowledge on this: Despite appearances, getting the horses to do the fancy-prance is actually quite difficult. The challenge is to signal the horse with your legs, hands, heels, etc. without making it look like you’re doing anything at all. Sure, dressage isn’t necessarily as physically demanding as other equestrian events but it does wipe you out.

Thanks! I’d never heard of it before last night, so I was rather confused. I’m also a little resentful that this gets to be an Olympic sport but Quidditch is off the table. =)
