Must-See: Fascinating New Video Shows Why Contraceptive Coverage Is Crucial For Women [VIDEO]

With the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act late last month — and our blissfully imminent access to affordable contraception, thanks to that ruling — what better time to reflect on why accessible birth control is important to women?

A new video from the Guttmacher Institute explains all the benefits that come from contraceptive use in the U.S. And while the video notes that contraception is a “virtually universal in the United States,” perhaps we need a quick refresher on just why it’s so crucial:

The typical American woman wants only two children. To achieve that goal, she will need to use contraception for about 30 years.

Some people say cost isn’t a problem because condoms are available in every drugstore. But, in reality, cost can be a major barrier to a woman’s choice of contraceptive method.

Even for a woman with health insurance, the pill can cost hundreds of dollars a year. And long-acting methods like the IUD and the implant—the most effective methods available—have even higher upfront costs.

Hundreds of dollars a year for 30 years? No, thank you. Watch the Guttmacher video for more fascinating stats:

Food is more critical and more expensive.   Yet people don’t look to insurance to pay for it.

People who can’t afford it do, it’s called food stamps.

Also if you’re going to use that logic, we may as well just not have the government cover anything ever, since a lot of important things–like health care or getting a good education–are expensive. Yet you can get government help for that stuff. If that’s your argument and you’re making a libertarian point then ok, thanks for being consistent, I guess.

If I have a nice job that offers me health insurance, I don’t see why I can’t take advantage of it to get certain things like birth control. Same goes if I choose my own insurance and pay for it independent of my job.
