Do We Believe What We See in Ads? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Don Draper would have us believe that happiness is “a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you’re doing is ok”…but do any of us actually believe what we see on billboards anymore? According to this infographic from Lab42, the answer is “no.” A mere 3 percent of survey participants believe that information given by advertisements is “very accurate,” while 57 percent feel that ads are “somewhat exaggerated.” In our opinion the most interesting statistics are related to advertisers’ depictions of women: 96 percent of those surveyed think half or more weight loss ads are photoshopped, and 77 percent of respondents who think beauty ads are “very accurate” are men. At least there is a nod to the way men are negatively portrayed. I don’t think it should be “balanced” with some mention of women when there is not much of that going on. Men are portrayed as stupid as compared to women. Are women portrayed as “promiscuous” as compared to men? No way.

Men in commercials and sitcoms are negatively portrayed as idiots and that’s a shame. Meanwhile, women are told, via commercial that it is THEIR responsibility and and theirs alone to earn respect, admiration and love from those around them by feeding them, keeping the house clean, staying beautiful, smelling nice, being hairless etc, etc, etc without breaking a sweat. It’s unfair to both sexes, yet these stupid stereotypes are accepted as truth.
