Viral Video: Yes, the “Highly Educated” Metro-North Ranter Works in Finance

If you happen to work in an office-cubicle-y type of environment, you’ve likely had the following video forwarded to you at least once this afternoon (see video below). In it, an irate 20s-ish Metro-North rail rider verbally spars with a public transit worker, who was apparently asking her not to curse so loudly. In the video she cries indignantly, “Do you know what schools I’ve been to?!” and “Do you know how well-educated I am!?”

Over here at Mogulite, we immediately began speculating over which schools and exactly what kind of career would instill such a, umm, profound sense of entitlement.

Well, it looks like the folks over at Dealbreaker uncovered her identity. And yes, she works in finance. But no, she didn’t go to an Ivy League school.

The woman in question is named Hermon Raju and she’s an employee at BNP Paribas, according to Dealbreaker. According to her (lapsed) LinkedIn profile (which she’s taken down, but we found in web cache), both her undergrad and graduate degrees are from NYU (Politics for undergrad, Finance and Marketing for grad).

Now that that’s cleared up, let’s roll the tape!

    India is a very class-stratified society. Those in the upper classes of India learn that they need to defend their upper-class status aggressively from uppity lower-class people. The types of attitudes and behaviors that work in India don’t fly so well in the US.

    Thanks for the insight into Raju’s culture. If she were in India this would be normal to be indignant over being corrected by what she considers to be a person of a lower class trying to correct her conversation. I am not even East Indian and any transit worker, no matter what race or color, who tried to do that to me would definitely be told to mind her own business! I have had similiar experiences in airports with airport workers. Every airport worker I have experienced thinks they are LAPD or something. It is absurd how much power these workers are being given. The only thing I want an airport worker or transit worker to say to me is, “may I see your ticket please?” Transit workers are not cops and I have had way too many experiences of their power mongering ways. I hardly ever fly anymore.
