Duke Students’ Pro-Feminist Campaign Slams “Man-Hating, Bra-Burning” Image

For some reason, “feminism” seems to be a dirty word fraught with common misconceptions. Which is why 16 students at Duke University decided to start a grassroots PR campaign in order to challenge the way people think about the word and all the baggage (both good and bad) that comes with it.
As the students’ Facebook page states, people shy away from calling themselves feminists for fear of being perceived as “man-hating, bra-burning, whiny liberal[s].” Or, the description continues, “perhaps a certain charming radio talk show host will label you as a ‘Feminazi’ or ‘slut.’ Even among more moderate crowds, feminism is still seen as too radical, too uncomfortable, or simply unnecessary. Feminism is both misunderstood and denigrated regularly…”
Exactly. Feminists aren’t crazy, and feminism is important. Which is probably why the group already has amassed more than 3,000 followers in less than a week.
We’ve compiled some of the best pro-feminist images from the group’s Facebook and Tumblr pages, but we definitely recommend checking them out in entirety.
