Duke Students’ Pro-Feminist Campaign Slams “Man-Hating, Bra-Burning” Image

For some reason, “feminism” seems to be a dirty word fraught with common misconceptions. Which is why 16 students at Duke University decided to start a grassroots PR campaign in order to challenge the way people think about the word and all the baggage (both good and bad) that comes with it.

As the students’ Facebook page states, people shy away from calling themselves feminists for fear of being perceived as “man-hating, bra-burning, whiny liberal[s].” Or, the description continues, “perhaps a certain charming radio talk show host will label you as a ‘Feminazi’ or ‘slut.’ Even among more moderate crowds, feminism is still seen as too radical, too uncomfortable, or simply unnecessary. Feminism is both misunderstood and denigrated regularly…”

Exactly. Feminists aren’t crazy, and feminism is important. Which is probably why the group already has amassed more than 3,000 followers in less than a week.

We’ve compiled some of the best pro-feminist images from the group’s Facebook and Tumblr pages, but we definitely recommend checking them out in entirety.

I agree wholeheartedly with the slogans they’re sporting, save for #9 which could do with elaboration and probably won’t make it to a bumper sticker anytime soon…

I think its how certain people portray themselves as a feminist and then want freebees.  If you are a true feminist then you pick up the bill and don’t then act like a damsel in distress needing financial help.  10 bucks over 3 months or 40 bucks a year is pretty damn cheap.  Ms Fluke should just drop her smart phone and goto a basic phone where she can just text and make phone calls.  It would allow her to save money and afford her contraceptive bill but she cant play angry birds anymore.
Then at the same time Sarah palin is attacked by the so called feminists.    Usually many associate feminists with NOW.  However NOW is just about politics, supporting liberals and not about supporting women.

As long as the feminist movement continues to sponsor anti-male philosophies, agendas, policies, and legislation, their man-hating reputation will remain strong, fresh, and pristine.
