Wow: Two-Thirds Of Self-Made Female Billionaires Are Chinese

Do you ever find yourself wondering, “Where are all the self-made, female billionaires?” Wonder no longer. They’re all in China. Pretty much.

As far as women who’ve struck ten digits or more on their own, the women of China are leading the way. Of the world’s 28 self-made female billionaires, a shocking 18 of them are Chinese, according to the HuRun report. That’s 64%.

It also means there are only 10 self-made female billionaires in the rest of the world. That’s pretty grim for the world, don’t you think?

Also, within of the top 10, of those 28, an amazing 7 of them are Chinese — topped off by real estate mogul Wu Yajun (pictured above), who’s worth $6.6 billion. Oprah, the only American on the list, came in at 10. The European women behind the fashion powerhouses of Zara and Benneton were the other non-Chinese women on the list.

Shocking as the China numbers are, we can explain them easily enough. For one, about 20% of the world lives in China. That doesn’t account for the 64% figure here, but it brings it closer. The better explanation, though, is in the incredible proliferation of wealth in China, and across Asia. Given recent growth patterns, the number of millionaires in Asia is expected to double by 2015 — with half of them being from China. So wealth in China is growing exponentially.

But still — whoa.

Actually, this statistic is astounding given that China’s economy is still ONE FIFTH that of America’s, and also one fifth that of Europe’s.  So, the combined economies of America and Europe are TEN TIMES larger, and yet China still has the vast majority of self made female billionaires with a much smaller economy.
