Buy This! It's Good For You!
New Female-Targeted Diet Coke Cans Are Pointless, And Also Ugly

“Ohhhh look, a Diet Coke can with zebra stripes!” said some women in Europe.
But then other women were like, “Uh, what? A Diet Coke can with a lady whose face is houndstooth print? And that one? Where the lady’s face is a tacky Hawaiian print!” What? Oh right! A Diet Coke campaign rolling out in seven European countries is trying to target women with “lady-themed” cans. If by Hawaiian print and zebra you mean chick-friendly, then…sure.
Are women more likely to buy a product if it has cool packaging? Maybe! But come on, it’s Diet Coke. Women in Europe know what Diet Coke is and what it tastes like. Will they buy it because of zebra print? I hope not.
Then again, they’re not totally the first to do it. Pellegrino recently did popular special edition bottles recently with Missoni and Bulgari. While they used patterns, they had fun fashion brand ties. Not exactly the same thing as generic Hawaiian print/houndstooth.
Also, don’t Europeans drink “Coke Light,” not “Diet Coke?” Questions abound!
