Fifty Shades Books Great For The Sex Toy Industry

At the New York City “Fifty Shades” signing last week, sexologist Dr. Logan Levkoff attested that E.L. James’s bestselling trilogy has changed the way women talk about sex — and also inspired pregnancies with its hot sexual content. I rolled my eyes at such assertions, but the joke is on me, as sales for sex toy balls have shot up 300 percent in the last month, and there’s little doubt that the increase is thanks to the British author’s books, which feature main character Anastasia Steele using Kegel balls at the command of wealthy CEO Christian Grey, who wants her to be his sex slave.
A spokesperson for sex toy company, Fun Factory, which specializes in offering vaginal sex balls, mailed a thank you note to “Fifty Shades” publisher Vintage Books for their unexpected progress, stating, “In the last month, our Smart Balls sales have gone up 300%.”
Thank you is right. And vibrator sales are also on top right now, so there’s definitely a connection between sex toy demand and “Fifty Shades” popularity. While the sex toy industry hasn’t exactly taken a whack from the recession, as people love sex whether they’re well-off or strapped for cash, a spike in sales of any product never hurts, and if “Fifty Shades” continues to influence our culture, the sex toy industry will thrive and prosper for a very long time.
Though I’ve said before that I doubt “Fifty Shades” will go down in history as a cherished, universally appreciated classic like “Harry Potter,” it must be said that the book has influenced the lives of many, including an elderly woman who contacted Fun Factory. The rep says of their exchange:
“Thanks to the book, we are getting emails and calls from around the world asking about our Smart Balls … Yesterday, the Fun Factory office received an email from a 74-year-old woman in Dubai who read the book while vacationing in the USA.”
That’s what I call revolutionary.
