The More You Know

Of Course ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Is The Best-Selling Kindle Book Of All Time

Given that women are no longer interested in sex, it’s astounding to hear that E.L. James’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” is the best-selling Kindle book of all time. I suppose we just prefer to imagine the act than actually do it ourselves. Living through fictional characters is just so much better.

It was revealed Tuesday that the first installment of the trilogy is the best-selling book ever on Amazon.co.uk, a major accomplishment since the novel was published in March. James has become the best-selling author of the year on the site as a whole, according to the Daily Mail. The Kindle version of “Fifty Shades of Grey” is also outselling the print edition at a rate higher than two to one. A Kindle rep said of James’s unique path to success, which started with self-publishing:

“Following a stint of self-publishing, first online and then via KDP, EL James found a fan base and her success has rocketed from there. Her books have become a worldwide phenomenon demonstrating what a powerful launch pad KDP can be.”

How’s that for a success story?

It makes me sick to my stomach. I wonder how others feel, knowing that their attempts to publish have failed, but this woman succeeded after replacing all the Bellas and Edwards in her fanfiction with new names.

The story lines are definitely different (Bella and Edward have a very innocent relationship compared to that of Mr. Grey and Anastasia), but I don’t totally get the hype either. It’s not particularly well-written and I really hate to see the female narrator take such a passive approach to her relationship. Everything is about Christian Grey, who is so controlling that he doesn’t even let her go out. Who WANTS that haha

Have you seen the SNL skit? I was sitting behind THREE women reading 50 Shades on a flight from San Francisco to Atlanta and I couldn’t help but eavesdrop as they discussed the book. Between the SNL skit and the conversation I was privy to, I can’t help but wonder if Christian Grey isn’t a substitution for the “difficult work” of creating a sex fantasy or possibly just a new-fangled sex toy that can tie you up and spank you.

Regardless, the constant repetition of “inner Goddess” is enough to put me off. It’s like a bad pulp fiction internal monologue.
