Even Fewer Women Than You Thought Are Fortune 500 Board Chairs

Not enough women serve on corporate boards! So you’ve heard. But did you know how many Fortune 500 board chairs are chicks? Just 1 in 38. Ugh.
Yeah, that’s just 2.6 percent! In other words, 97.4 percent of the people making the ultimate decisions, playing ultimate head honcho of the head honchos, are guys.
Overall this year 16.1 percent of board members of Fortune 500 companies were women, which also isn’t great. But it’s better than the dismal board chair figure. All these stats come from Catalyst’s annual census, released today.
When it comes down to it, not too many names come to mind. There’s Andrea Jung at Avon (who’s no longer CEO, just chairman), Ellen Kullman at DuPont, Ursula Burns at Xerox, Indra Nooyi at PepsiCo., and frankly, fewer than a dozen others.
