Girl Scouts To Indiana Congressman: We Do Not Promote Homosexuality

With its 100th anniversary resolution and century of achievements to think about, the Girl Scouts should not have to answer to Indiana Rep. Bob Morris, who wrote earlier this week that the team-building organization “promote[s] homosexuality,” abortion, and “communists” in part through its ties to Planned Parenthood.

But Victor Inzunza, director of corporate communications for Girl Scouts of the USA, clarified some of Morris’s erroneous remarks in a statement to Forbes:

“Representative Morris is off the mark on his claims. GSUSA does not take a position or develop materials on issues related to human sexuality, and we DO NOT have a national relationship with Planned Parenthood.”

Addressing Morris’s complaint that the Girl Scouts accept transgender boys into troops, Inzunza wrote: “the diversity within Girl Scouts is what makes [the organization] great,” noting it has welcoming people of different backgrounds since the very beginning:

“When our founder Juliette Gordon Low assembled the first 18 Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, the group included not just girls from that Southern town’s prominent families, but also girls recruited from the orphan asylum and the local synagogue. During WWII, Girl Scouts served Japanese-American girls in internment camps, and in the 60s, Dr. Martin Luther King praised Girl Scouts as a force for desegregation. Girl Scouts has always blazed new trails with the purpose of making our world a better place to live.”

The GSA responded with tact, but Forbes reporter Jenna Goudreau was dead on when she pointed out in her article, “the Girl Scouts of the USA…provides millions of girls their first exposure to business with an annual cookie sale that exceeds $700 million.” Door-to-door cookie sales enables young girls to learn about money, work with people, and develop important skills to succeed in the business world, so let’s hope the Girl Scouts will be free to enjoy their experiences without wild accusations in the future.
