5 Actresses Who Would Be Better As ‘The Glass Castle’ Lead Than Jennifer Lawrence

It’s no secret that The Jane Dough loves all things pertaining to Jennifer Lawrence. But I wasn’t sure what to make of the rumor that she is in talks to portray the lead in a potential film adaptation of Jeannette Walls’s phenomenal memoir, “The Glass Castle,” which recounts the journalist’s unusual upbringing with parents who chose a nomadic, homeless existence to constantly experience adventure and thrill.

It’s an unbelievable story on many levels as well as the first book that inspired me to pursue nonfiction writing, so I was rather disappointed that the casting is so off the mark. J-Law is very talented, but always seems to be in tough girl, fight mode. I’m sure the “Hunger Games” has something to do with my view of her, and while the main character in “The Glass Castle” is as strong as young girls come, she’s never hostile or angry. As Gothamist put it, “Walls’s greatest strength is her ability to tell her story with compassion and empathy rather than bitterness.” The beauty of “The Glass Castle” is that Walls doesn’t take pity on herself or resent the family for making her live in cardboard boxes and cars, and it’s hard to see Lawrence going through all that without a frown on her face or giving off the vibe that she knows it’s not right. This isn’t a swipe at Lawrence at all, but she doesn’t seem to have the crucial sweetness factor for the part, so here are some other actresses who could pull the role of Jeannette Walls off very well.

With the exception of Emma Stone, (who has naturally blonde hair)  all of these actresses are blonde-haired! They all have giant anime eyes and rounded faces. Is it just me, or is the cherubic look the only shorthand in cinema for “nice girl?” Oddly enough, J-Law has quite a few of these traits as well.

I didn’t select anyone based on their hair color, but their similarities to the main character in “Glass Castle.” Yeah J-Law is a nice girl, but I do believe she is too rough around the edges for this particular role. I can’t imagine her being easy going and cheerful surrounded by poverty as Walls was. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing either, just a thought.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion on the possible casting of Jennifer Lawrence as Jeannette Walls.  I don’t think I have ever seen Jennifer act as a “tough girl” or bitter(in her films) and, rough around the edges?do you mean Lawrence, personally?… a girl from a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky…check out Crushable for a pic of Lawrence’s childhood home and tell me if that looks like the enivronment of someone who is “rough around the edges” (LOL!).  True, Lawrence is best known for playing strong young women but, with a firm moral center and in each of these films she is also the only maternal figure her siblings have ever known.  Poker House, Winter’s Bone, The Hunger Games…all stories that feature Lawrence as a young women who not only looks after her siblings but is incredibly strong, responsible and sweet to them as well.  I would think that the role would actually be one that Lawrence is already familiar with; young woman growing up with hardship looking after her siblings… and, having read the book, and seeing as Lawrence is one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood today, the role would be in more than capable hands.
