Business Mag Tells Women To Excel “From The Bedroom To The Boardroom”

GlobeAsia, a leading regional business magazine, wants women to succeed. That’s great! Their aim, however, might have been a bit too… broad.

In an ad for its 2011 Leaders Forum this week, which featured a handful of influential female Indonesian business and government figures, GlobeAsia heralded “the rise of women leaders in Asia,” according to SE Asia Realtime. Okay, nothing wrong so far. But then it included the tagline “From The Bedroom To The Boardroom.” Which is, not surprisingly, generating just the wee-ist bit of controversy. After all, I’d imagine most businesswomen don’t want anyone picturing their skills in the bedroom at this, a most chaste institution we hold dear: the business conference. Creepy.

And, as Asia Realtime noted, the ad is particularly unfortunate in light of recent comments from Jakarta Gov. Fauzi Bowo, who suggested that “women would not wear revealing clothes to avoid being raped or victimized.” If this ad could possibly play well in any crowd, this one was not it.

While there are few confidence builders as strong as walking into work knowing that you have your personal life not just in order but in pristine condition, to everyone’s mutual satisfaction, the article title suggests a doctrine that is beyond belief AND, without a companion piece that insists the same duties for men, is obviously sexist.

While I find it difficult to believe that anyone hasn’t at one time or another imagined the personal habits of another employee, male or female, whether their grooming habits, sexual performance, or even how they interact with their family is up to snuff, it’s bizarre that this specific mandate had been put forth.

Again, sexist, obviously, and if one needs more proof, that last bit about rape outfits takes the cake and eats it too. Striving perfection is a common goal, not the only goal, but an understandable one, for BOTH sexes, and…well, I’m just going to tailspin and repeat myself.
