Gloria Steinem’s Huge NYC Apartment (And Library Ladder) Will Make You Hate Her

Just kidding…kind of.

All young people (who aren’t trust fund recipients) in the Manhattan area know how expensive city housing is, so feminist legend Gloria Steinem’s living situation circa 1966 is pretty enviable. In a new segment for Oprah Winfrey, Steinem gives the TV show host a tour of her “cozy” 5-bedroom NYC pad, which she and her friends purchased for $160,000 in the sixties. As Oprah points out, the second floor walk-up would cost millions now, and you can’t help getting at least a little angry about the rise in living costs!

Though Steinem has resided in the place for more than forty years, it has only recently begun to feel like home to her, she says:

“For years and years and years I lived out of cardboard boxes. I thought that everything was temporary. And also I was brought up to think you didn’t make a home except for a husband and children. You didn’t make it for yourself. So it took me [a while.]“

Better late than never, though!

Most amazing part of the digs? She has a LIBRARY LADDER. Like Belle in “Beauty and the Beast.” Disney movies do reflect real life after all!
