Gloria Steinem Has Never Heard of HBO’s “Girls”

And she’s the only person in the world. “Girls” zombies everywhere, you can go sob into your pillows now.

The irony behind feminist champion Gloria Steinem’s lack of knowledge on HBO’s “Girls” is that the show has been declared revolutionary and all-things amazing for young women. Steinem’s lack of familiarity with “Girls” came to New York magazine’s attention at Wednesday’s Brooklyn Artists Ball, when the publication asked for her thoughts on Lena Dunham’s new venture. “I don’t know what it is,” Steinem said.

Some would say this isn’t the end of the world, but I’d say it’s akin to Julie Powell learning that Julia Child disliked her food blog. With its degrading hookup scenes and unhealthy relationships, “Girls” was never all that empowering to begin with, so I don’t count on Steinem hopping on this bandwagon.

    I didn’t like “Girls,” mainly because it’s boring, but what is with this notion—common on womenz’s blogs—that comedy is supposed to be “empowering?” Comedy probably isn’t the place to go if you’re looking for admirable and well-adjusted and “empowered” characters. Comedy is about mishaps and disaster and humiliation. That’s why it’s funny (if done well, which “Girls” sadly isn’t).
