Guilty Pleasures For Powerful Women

Everybody’s gotta relax sometimes, even powerful women. When your schedule is filled to the brim with work, social obligations, workout sessions, and everything else life throws at you, how you choose to spend your free time is very telling. Here are a couple of (proven, unproven and medium-proven) guilty pleasures for all of you hard-working women out there.
Though many would think powerful women are too intelligent to be drawn into pop’s very superficial world, that’s not always the case. Plenty of high-achieving professional women enjoy rocking out to Katy Perry just as much as the next girl. Perhaps they can relate to some of the powerful divas in the pop industry. After all, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Carly Rae Jepsen are nothing if not brilliant businesswomen. So don’t be surprised if you’re out to the club and you see a professional woman jamming out onspicuously hard to that Lady Gaga single.
Law & Order Marathons
It’s been theorized by some, namely Slate’s Michael Kinsley, that Law & Order reruns are the “secret vice of power women.” Even the ultimate in powerful women, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, admits to sneaking in L&O reruns when she has the chance. Of course, watching one old episode of Law & Order doesn’t really constitute a guilty pleasure. When I say “watching reruns,” I mean multiple. I mean like five hour marathons of back to back Law & Order episodes.
The Shower or Bath Cocktail
While many women prefer a microbrew over a lemon drop, the thrill of downing an adult beverage while you’re taking a bath or shower is the same for everyone. Something about that cool drink refreshing you while hot water pours onto your body is one of life’s simple pleasures. Personal experience tells me that other powerful women feel the same way.
Tabloids or Gossip Blogs
The world of celebrity, is a strange and surreal place. The high level professional women who I know who read tabloids or their favorite gossip blogs don’t do so to get factual information. They do it to mock, fantasize, and theorize about celebrity goings-on with a high-level of snark, cynicism, and glee.
Before you judge too harshly, consider the fact that it’s just another way to relieve stress. Some people smoke or drink, some people over eat, and some read tabloids. #HatersToTheLeft
If the success of Fifty Shades of Grey is any indication, people enjoy a thoughtless, trashy read. It’s common knowledge that a large portion of 50 Shades author E.L. James’s audience is female. If a woman is empowered enough to buy and read something as racy as 50 Shades, I’d call her a powerful woman! Jackie Collins herself is a powerful woman, and she is the queen of trashy novels.
Let’s face it: sometimes at the end of a hard day, you want to curl up with a book that is not too difficult to digest. Trashy novels can provide the sensory stimulation powerful women need to stay engaged, and the fantasy that enables them to escape.
Jennifer Lawrence admits that on her time off, she likes to lounge around in her sweats and watch trashy reality TV. Reality empires like the Real Housewives empire and the Kardashian stable of shows prove that there’s a huge market for watching low-grade drama. And it’s certainly safe to say that a large majority of the viewing audience of these shows is female.
Among the women who watch these shows, motivated professional women are surprisingly prevalent. It may not be something that all of these women readily admit, but sometimes it’s just entertaining to watch the primal drama that ensues on these shows.
Many US residents splurge on fast food from time to time, but seeing a woman in a power suit scarfing down a chalupa at 1AM isn’t something you see every day. With a fast-paced schedule including inevitable late nights, sometimes even the most disciplined women break down and chow down on some junk food. For some it’s an entire pint of Ben and Jerry’s, for others it’s a Doritos Locos taco, but a common denominator for many powerful women is the occasional lapse into sinful eating.
Mild Internet Stalking
It’s safe to say most people on Facebook have lingered on an ex’s page a little too long. That said, I think women, and particularly powerful women, tend to use the internet to spy on people a little more intensely. Not only romantic interests, but old friends, rivals, or frenemies can all fall victim to social media scrutiny. Women who are computer savvy and able to hide behind a cloak of anonymity seem to be able to take gathering information on acquaintances to the next level. You know what they say — knowledge is power!
It can’t all be bubble baths and yoga when powerful women de-stress. Nor can we spend all of our off-hours driking. Cosmos after work with your girls are great, but sometimes you need to explore your other options when it comes to stress relief.
