Dear World, While You Hate Gwyneth Paltrow Remember She Is PEOPLE’S Most Beautiful Woman

Talk about going through a range of emotions in a short amount of time. Gwyneth Paltrow has gone from being named the most hated celebrity (as deemed by a Star Magazine poll) to being the most beautiful woman in the world (this week) according to PEOPLE Magazine. Basically, you are allowed to hate her for telling us to eat tons of kale and garden seven hours a day but you should also remember that she is one of the most attractive people walking the earth right now and outranks Kerry Washington and Jennifer Lawrence (who made the list but not the cover).
You’d think the editors at these magazines could have planned this a little better. Though being beautiful does not necessarily make you well liked, it’s quite the turnaround for Ms. Paltrow. I mean, Anne Hathaway is quite gorgeous and people seem to hate her all the more for it.
In fact, this new title for Gwyneth could even add to her image problem. It doesn’t help that she tries to come off as “Aww shucks! Little ol’ me!” in a quote about finding out she got the top spot.
Paltrow tells the magazine in a video outtake, “I honestly thought that someone was playing a joke on me. I had to read the e-mail three times. . . I [thought] I had developed dyslexia.”
Plus she also told the mag “[Her husband Chris Martin will] make a joke about it. If I’ve gotten fully dressed up, he’ll be like, ‘Oh, wow! You’re Gwyneth Paltrow!’ Because he’s used to seeing me in, like, baggy shorts and frizzy hair.” See, she’s just like us.
As Maureen O’Connor of NYMag points out, Gwyneth has a tough line to walk:
“Earnest onlookers will conclude that the world hates beautiful women. Jaded onlookers will conclude that publicity is a double-edged sword; the same hard-nosed PR strategy that lands you on the cover of People, golden hair bathed in sunlight and wrinkles erased, will also attract haters. To succeed in Hollywood, you must shove yourself down everyone’s throat. To shove yourself down everyone’s throat is to induce gagging.”
Maybe Gwyneth is so hated because she isn’t shoving herself down everyone’s throat as an actress, but as a homemaker, health guru, mom, best friend, yogi, digestive expert, etc. As O’Connor said, she has made “being the most at everything her job” while also constantly trying to remind us that she is a regular person — except she isn’t at all. Because regular people do not get to be on the cover of PEOPLE Magazine’s “Most Beautiful People” issue!
