Afghan Women’s Affairs Leader Hanifa Safi Assassinated

Safi was killed instantly after a bomb that was attached to her car detonated, according to a report from Reuters. Her husband, who was riding in the same vehicle, is currently in a coma.
But while the bombing is in and of itself horrific, its place in a string of similar incidents of violence against women in the country makes it all the more shocking. An assassin claimed the life of another Women’s Affairs head just six years ago, making this latest death the second in the department’s mere 10-year existence.
Although it’s unclear who is responsible for the bombing (and no group has stepped forward yet), a report from the BBC noted that Safi’s decision to go in public without her head covered (a practice inconsistent with a conservative Islam lifestyle) may have drawn animosity from the Taliban.
