Sisters Who Sang Viral Santorum Song Amazed He Didn’t Abort Disabled Child
5:00 pm, March 21st | by Laura Donovan
Stalling for another person is tough — and that’s perhaps what led the Harris sisters to say it was “amazing” of presidential contender Rick Santorum not to abort his eighth child as they waited for the delayed politician to arrive at his own campaign event. Hey, people spout unusual things when under pressure or thrown curveballs.
The girls, whose anthem for Santorum went viral earlier this month, opened for him at a Louisiana Tea Party rally Wednesday and found themselves having to remain on stage for about 30 minutes due to the candidate’s weather-influenced tardiness. According to BuzzFeed, the 18 and 20-year-old young ladies “indulged in some light patter with the audience, including praising Santorum for the number of children he has (‘Seven kids!’).” He may as well have written “Cheaper By the Dozen,” right?
But the weird comment came after, when one of the girls said of Santorum’s 3-year-old Isabella, who was born with Edwards syndrome and hospitalized earlier this year, “he didn’t abort the last one, which is amazing.” I’m sure she’ll appreciate that when she’s old enough to understand the meaning of “abortion.”
Until Santorum showed up, the girls played two rounds of “Game On,” crooned other patriotic tunes, and even conducted a Q&A with the audience about why they’re Santorum fans. As the Harris sisters left the gathering (and internally celebrated their freedom), they reportedly shouted at the crowd, “God bless America and God bless Rick Santorum. Oh, and Ronald Reagan.” What, no love for anyone else?
“Game On” preaches pro-life sentiment and is about as far right as a song could be, so the Harris sisters weren’t out to say it’s amazing when women don’t terminate their pregnancies. Maybe one of them misspoke because she didn’t expect to stay on stage beyond her 2 1/2 minute-long number. As we learned last week, people do weird things when overwhelmed or under a lot of pressure.
