Paul Ryan Must Be Relieved That “Hey Girl, It’s Paul Ryan” Page Is Shutting Down

Exactly a week ago, my day was made once I learned of the new “Hey Girl, It’s Paul Ryan” Tumblr page, which exploded on the Internet and sparked a light-hearted dialogue about the Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan’s similarities to “The Notebook” actor Ryan Gosling. But days after the politician himself responded in a tickled manner to the site, the three ladies behind the venture decided to close up shop…and shatter the worlds of Ryan fangirls everyone.
“This has been a lot of fun, but we’re going to stop now while we’re still ahead,” the young women said in a Monday farewell post, which is slightly reminiscent of the goodbye Tumblr entry that the wildly popular “Texts From Hillary” founders penned after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave props to the fun meme site. Upon getting complimented by the former first lady herself, they decided to pull a “Seinfeld” and end their project before it went downhill.
It seems the “Hey Girl, It’s Paul Ryan” women took the same approach but also found the site was taking up more time than they had, said Emily Zanotti, one of the masterminds behind the page:
“The decision to end the site was based partly on the fact that we’d gotten a response [from Ryan] and partly because we wanted to end on a funny note. Our original intention was to not only do a little Ryan-worshipping, but also to inject some fun into an otherwise dreary topic. It turns out our message resonated, especially among women, but with politics, the window of opportunity is small and its not long before things become stale. We definitely hope he and his staff enjoyed the site – and it seems they did – but we wanted to make sure we didn’t begin to interfere with more pressing issues or coverage. Plus, it was starting to become a full time job!”
We’re all about the marriage between politics and humor, but given Ryan’s discouragement of visiting the Tumblr, we can imagine he’ll be quite relieved to hear that his face won’t be popping up in any Gosling-esque memes!
