High School Should Let Student Wear ‘I Enjoy Vagina Shirt’

In my freshman health class, the teacher instructed all students to scream “penis” and “vagina” at the top of their lungs on the football field. Yeah we giggled and made jokes about the “assignment” for weeks, but at the end of the day there wasn’t anything funny about the whole ordeal. Body parts aren’t a laughing matter or source of shame, and that’s why a Queens high school was wrong to send home a bisexual female student for donning a shirt that reads, “I enjoy vagina.”
Sure it seems to beg for attention, but what teenager doesn’t do that every once in a while? Besides, I don’t think that was 15-year-old Brianna Demato’s intention when she donned the article of clothing to school, as she’d walked the halls of Newtown High many times in the shirt without getting in trouble.
“It’s hypocritical,” the young lady, whose mother is on her side, told the New York Daily News. “They use the word in class — why can’t I, on a shirt?”
She has gotten away with the wearing top in the past, but was given an ultimatum when the dean saw her sporting it at lunch. The teen was told to either change or leave the premises, so she went with the latter option. I would have done the same. No school, woo!
School officials were concerned the piece of attire was a distraction, an understandable worry since many high schoolers have the maturity level of toddlers and would undoubtedly whisper about such a style choice to each other when they should be listening to the teacher and staying on task. This incident sounds a tad discriminatory though, and the high school isn’t doing anything to massage its image by declining to comment.
The same goes for a classmate of Demato’s who told the Daily News:
“I wouldn’t want my kids wearing a shirt like that. Go to the gay parade like that. Don’t go to school like that.”
Freedom of speech, guys. Let’s not forget we were granted that a very long time ago.
