Holy Cow — You Just Spent $1.8 Billion On Valentine’s Day Flowers

We’re all a bit analytical here at The Jane Dough, so instead of compiling a “Top 10 Fuzziest Pink V-day Gifts” slideshow, we decided to expose the — pardon our language — butt-ton of money people will be spending on various gifts for their loved ones this year. We’re all about throwing around money to fuel the economy, but come on guys — 17 billion dollars on presents? Really?

According to the annual National Retail Foundation Survey, all you hopeless romantics out there will spend 8.5 percent more on this year’s Valentine’s day than you did last year. And, even crazier, the amount that all you saps will shell out this year is the highest in the survey’s 10-year history. But hey, if that doesn’t say economic turnaround, I don’t know what does.

Here are a few more jaw-dropping facts about your V-Day shopping habits:

1.Jewelry

Jewelry– Nearly 19 percent of all V-day revelers will buy jewelry this year, according to the NRF's numbers, the highest in the survey’s history. Total, people will spend nearly $4.1 billion on Tiffany’s and the like, making February 14 one of the sparkliest days of the year. (Because of diamonds. Get it? Get it??)

2.Flowers

Flowers- Surprisingly, only 36 percent of people will buy flowers this year, according to the NRF's estimation. Even though the number seems a bit low, this’ll add up to $1.8 billion.

3.Clothing

Clothing- The survey says that people will spend $1.4 billion on clothing. We assume this means lingerie. Just make sure that it’s the right size. No one’s gonna feel special when you buy underwear that's two sizes too big.

4.Candy

Candy- The best part! Not surprisingly, more than half of all V-day celebrants will buy candy, spending upwards of $1.5 billion. Milton Hershey is definitely smiling right now.

5.Cards

Gift Cards- A classic. 13.3 percent of you will spend a grand total of $1.1 billion on gift cards, up from 12.6 percent last year, according to the NRF. Because nothing says “I love you” more than a $3 Hallmark card from Duane Reade.

6.An Evening Out

Evening Out- And finally, 35.6 percent of you will treat someone special to an evening out on the town. You’d better be going somewhere nice because you’re shelling out a whopping $3.5 billion on this.
