Sweet: Hugh Hefner Pushes For Gay Rights, Says They’re Under Attack

I am lukewarm on Hugh Hefner, but applaud him for recognizing in a September editorial of his publication that gay rights should be universally honored and that the “fight for gay marriage is, in reality, a fight for all of our rights.”
“Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom,” the Playboy powerhouse writes. “Their goal is to dehumanize everyone’s sexuality and reduce us to using sex for the sole purpose of perpetuating our species.”
Of course, the magazine editor is concerned about more than just equal rights for gays, as several recent law proposals have put the progress and privacy of women in jeopardy:
“In Arizona, under a proposal bill women who hoped to have their health insurer cover birth control would have been forced to provide their employer with proof they were taking the pill for a medical condition — not just for the purpose of avoiding pregnancy…Nearly 50 years ago in the pages of this magazine I warned that ‘when religion rather than reason dictates legislation, do not expect logic with your law.’ Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom.”
Hefner has a lot on his hands, and while I’m not crazy about his womanizing ways, I cannot deny that he cares about equality for all.
