Huntsman Daughter: “We Need More Heels Running Around Capitol Hill”

One of the downsides of journalism is that editors occasionally stamp outlandish or irrelevant headlines on stories and the writer takes the blame for it. I suspect that was the case for Abby Huntsman Livingston, daughter of former presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, who published a Huffington Post column Monday titled, “We Need More Heels Running Around Capitol Hill.” The story only references the aforementioned evil shoes at the very end of the piece, when the writer notes an upcoming panel called “Running in Heels: Where Are the Women Candidates for 2012 — And How Can We Get More of Them?”, so we’re thinking the headline is meant to grab the attention of readers. But whether or not the writer picked it, the piece’s glaring implications are enough to make your stomach turn or create a powerpoint presentation for your office on the health risks of heels.
Sure Livingston Huntsman, who opens the piece by praising the work of women’s rights leader Susan B. Anthony, emphasizes the importance of female involvement in voting and the political system, but some of us simply can’t get past the heels addition, especially considering the detrimental health effects these damaging creations have on a person’s feet. Making the case for more women on the Hill is vastly different than arguing for more high heel-wearing ladies in Washington, but I’m not sure if it’s more offensive to fight for the latter or always associate women with heels. I’ll give Huntsman Livingston, who done some quality work for HuffPost, the benefit of the doubt here and assume she was either trying to promote this week’s event or engage potential readers, but the heels tie is hard to overlook, especially since many women are at war with these crippling walking instruments.
