Five Questions

Potato Chip Mogul Jeff Leichleiter Wants to Tap His Inner Clooney

Welcome to Mogulite’s “Five Questions,” a regular feature in which we grill CEOs and titans of industry on their wildest aspirations — and ask them what it’s really like to be a mogul.

Jeff Leichleiter is what you’d call a “lifer” among food moguls. He helped co-found Pacific Northwest sensation Tim’s Cascade Snacks more than 25 years ago — which, for the uninitiated, basically means he’s the Willy Wonka of potato chips. He’s stayed on board as a top exec (today he’s general manager) ever since — despite the three separate buyouts of the company. Obviously, the guy is doing something right.

Right now he’s in the midst of expanding the company’s regional favorite Hawaiian Brand Snacks nationally — and he plans to reach all 50 states in just one year. It sounds like a tall order, but we wouldn’t put it past him.

When he’s not busy planning three new snack food launches this year (he wouldn’t give us specifics), he said he’s still buying discount whenever he can — and dreaming of the day when George Clooney might depict him on the silver screen. At least that’s what he told us…

If you could buy anything you don’t have right now (money is no object) what would it be?
Enough drinking water resources to provide the worlds needs. Find a way to provide safe food everywhere.

Who would you want to play you in a movie?

George Clooney- Then my wife would be sure to go see the movie.

Who’s your favorite fellow mogul?

Ron Zappe (former owner and CEO of Zappes Potato Chips)

What is the biggest myth about being rich?

That it can bring you happiness.

What do you still buy discount?

Anything I can.

Many rich folks got that way by being tight with a dollar.  And they remember what it was like when they were NOT rich.  They also recognize the needs of the poor, such as potable drinking water, and would like to help.  Not surprisingly, some stick with old habits and wait to make purchases only when they can get a discount.  Good for them.
