Jennifer Lawrence Amused And Perplexed By Katniss Weight Criticism

When you land a career-defining role in a wildly popular film, you probably don’t particularly understand why your size would be a major discussion point.
That appears to be the line of thinking of “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence, who was called a “big-boned lady” with too much “lingering baby fat” for the part of impoverished, starving Katniss Everdeen in the immediate aftermath of the flick’s release. Reviewers didn’t outright label her as pudgy or overweight, but questioned whether the 21-year-old Kentucky native “looked hungry enough to play Katniss,” who must illegally hunt to bring food home to her family. Lawrence, who has said before that she’s “miserable when [she's] dieting and [likes] the way [she looks],” told someone in confidence, who reached out to the Chicago Sun-Times, that she was not hurt by the body comments but found it ironic that itty bitty celebrities are chastised for perpetuating the problem of sending unrealistic images into the world and now she’s under a microscope for merely being average:
“Jennifer told me, ‘This is hilarious. First, people say how so many actresses in Hollywood look anorexic, and now they are criticizing me for looking normal.’”
According to the Sun-Times, Lawrence also said that tiny body types “are too often adopted by young girls and women — thanks to what they are constantly being shown as being attractive.”
She’s right. Sure Lawrence is shrugging it off now, but what if this is just the beginning of a long line of negative weight remarks about her? After all, she has several upcoming projects alongside high-profile actors in addition to the “Hunger Games” sequel, so the media will definitely continue to keep a close watch on her. When young women rise to fame, they often say they won’t suffer or drop to a size zero in jeans to maintain their status, yet inevitably find themselves thinning out, whether by choice or under pressure from society. Lawrence is free to do as she pleases, but we don’t want to see the nascent, budding actress conform to the skinny look as a direct result of all the buzz around her appearance and movie.
