Stewart Slams Romney’s Flip-Flopping On Stay-At-Home Moms [VIDEO]

You know the campaign news cycle is getting a little stale when a story about a penguin biting a GOP candidate draws national news coverage. And it’s true that the Hilary Rosen-Ann Romney controversy (Rosengate 2012!) has gotten a little old.

Yet, somehow, “The Daily Show’s” Jon Stewart managed to breathe new life into the stay-at-home-mom outrage — by pointing out how ridiculous the whole thing is.

“Mitt Romney can now campaign on motherhood being hard,” Stewart noted, “probably the only issue he hasn’t flip-flopped on.” Except for… oh, wait. Yes, he kind of has. In a clip from January that “The Daily Show” pulled up, Romney is seen speaking on welfare assistance and work requirements in Massachusetts while he was governor. In the clip, Romney says that 85 percent of the people receiving government assistance didn’t have to hold down a job. Oh, but Romney was set to change all that:

“I wanted to increase the work requirement. I said, for instance, even if you have a child two years of age you need to go to work. It’ll cost the state more, providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.”

Ahhhhhhheeeeeeeeyyyeeaaaa.

This puts things in rather stark contrast to the recent “My Career Choice Is Motherhood” outrage, doesn’t it?

Or, as Stewart succinctly put it, “Oh my God, I think Mitt Romney just said his own wife has no dignity!”
