Katie Couric: “I Wrestled With Bulimia All Through College”

Many of us remember college as the best time of our life, but TV personality Katie Couric, who suffered from bulimia for six years, battled the awful eating disorder throughout higher education.

“I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that,” Couric said during a segment of her show that will air Monday. “And I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that’s wrong, you’re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself, whether it’s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn’t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that.”

Couric’s sickness trickled into the early days of her career, but sources told the New York Post that the journalist became healthy again after she researched the long-lasting effects of eating disorders and working with a therapist. According to the Post, the episode focuses on musician and fellow eating disorder survivor Demi Lovato, who checked into rehab two years ago for “emotional and physical issues“:

“I remember being 3 years old in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach,” Lovato says during the program. “I remember thinking in my head ‘I wonder if one day this will ever be flat?’”
